Great advice for adventurers, Laurel. I think you've pretty much covered all bases. As an adventure guide since '89 and outfitter since '96 I'd like to add just one additional point that indicates you are dealing with a reputable company. That is that the issue of risk is not avoided a la "It's perfectly safe, nothing to worry about". Most adventure activities do carry an element of risk - after all, that's what makes them exciting and why we choose to do them in the first place! A reputable operator will acknowledge the risks and explain the measures they take to manage them. For example, as you mentioned: well-trained and experienced guides, appropriate and well-maintained equipment, emergency back-up procedures.
If you make it to Ecuador again, please look us up http://www.riosecuador.com

Hi Steve,
Thank you for raising an excellent point. Readers, please take note of Steve's advice, and bail on any company that doesn't acknowledge the risk factor.
Thanks for the tip!
Best,
Laurel
