After the Freedom Riders were brutally attacked in Montgomery, Attorney General Robert Kennedy wanted to bring federal charges against Klansman Claude Henley for his blatant civil rights violations.
Henley had been photographed in mid-rampage during the attacks and his photos appeared in Life magazine.

Fortunately, Henley had a good lawyer, future Southern Poverty Law Center founder Morris Dees. Henley walked out of Kennedy's federal court scot-free. Dees collected a fee worth about $35,000 in today's money, which his law-partner Millard Fuller said was paid by the Montgomery Klan and White Citizens Council.
Henley's victims got nothing, least of all justice. Are their names etched on the fountain?
