Let's see - before I go on a road trip, I make sure I have: sunglasses, headache medicine (sun's glare can do nasty things), non-perishable snacks, beverages (enough for at least the first six hours), lip balm, a map (smartphones can fail or get lost), a list of telephone numbers and addresses (see note on smartphone failing...) spare change for unexpected toll roads (I have a small ziplock with change in each car all the time), my AAA and insurance cards, a book or two (stuck behind an accident or in bad weather? That computer will lose its charge), a blanket (ever had to get down on the ground to check something on your car?), an extension cord (ever tried to find a plug in a hotel room), and my own alarm clock. (see above about smartphone failing).
