Experience America this summer with Andrew Burmon

This most recent Fourth of July, on a beach in South Carolina, a guy named Freddie handed me a beer after I took his photo in front of his American flag. He'd just done his best Iwo Jima pose, and as I tapped his email address into my phone, promising to send him the pictures very soon, he insisted I take a turn hoisting the stars and stripes. Road trip tip: Do whatever a beer-toting, banner-flying patriot asks on Independence Day and you'll be handsomely rewarded.
Two months ago, I couldn't have guessed where Folly Beach might be. Now, I'm singing its praises to anyone who will listen. I never thought I'd be planning my first trip to South Carolina, but after a short stay in Folly, I'm already thinking about my second.
The stay: I was staying at the Tides at Folly Beach, a converted Holiday Inn that enjoys an enviable position on the sand, right next to the fishing pier at the end of Center Street. Balconies look over the water. The beachfront bar bustles with activity as the sun goes down--a fantastic live act was jamming on July 4, and other combos are frequently on stage.
The crowd: These people are here to have a good time. That doesn't mean getting sloppy drunk--though there's some of that!--but rather that the crowds at Folly have a vacation mindset. Watches aren't necessary, and what kind of appointment would you have anyway? Rita's, an outstanding restaurant across the street from Tides, serves food all day, with the bar open until late. When that closes, head to Surf Bar, a pitch-perfectly themed spot just off Center Street that goes even later.
The vibe: On a scale of one to comatose, Folly is laid back, a step shy of vegetative, even after the morning's hangover has worn off. No shirt? Not a problem. Barefoot treks to the breakfast food truck? Sure. Drinking a beer on the beach? Just keep it in a plastic cup. Riding motorcycles without helmets? Wait, how do you do it where you're from?
The beach: It's enormous, particularly at low tide. On what has to be one of the busiest weekends of the year, I had no problem finding a patch of sand not just for relaxing but for frisbee tossing. The one knock could be that the water approaches bathtub temperatures, but that's actually a plus if you plan to spend all day swimming. (You should plan to spend all day swimming.)
The show: The night of July 4, I grabbed a bunch of sparklers and headed for the beach, where explosives experts were setting up the night's show. The casualness about the fireworks was amazing, as families set up towels and beach chairs right below the blast zone. Before the official show started, we were surprised by random flashes and bangs, as people lit their BYO fireworks.
The departure: Perhaps the best thing about Folly is that it feels so removed from real life--while being just nine miles from Charleston, a city well worth seeing in its own right. That makes the beach accessible but at a small remove, a short drive that lets you mind decompress and switch into surf gear. A couple, fellow hotel guests, told me they could see the bridge back to the mainland from their room. That's not a good thing, they said. It reminds them that the real world is just a few miles away.

Thanks for ruining the secret, my wife and I have been going there for the last 5 years. It is the best beach in the states I have ever been to. The locals are super friendly and the beach is massive and clean. Most importantly it is(was) not to crowded. Well here's to hoping nobody reads this article, LOL.

Must be a laid back place, they left these two phaggots alone.

Thanks a lot now Folly Beach will be jammed full of tourists and second homes owners. There goes a quiet small beach town...

I love, love, love Charleston,SC. Yes! Folly Beach is great when they have music at the end of the pier! Everyone loves to Sagg(State Dance) on a warm summer night on the pier and it is free or visit the Sand dollar for a nice cool drink just across the street from the beach. The people are great! The folks that live on Folly live next to one another people like a lawyer could live next to a suffer or a Dr. could live next to a house full of students we all love one another. Peace and love is still alive on Folly Beach!

i absolutely love Folly Beach..........my son lives 5 miles on James Island from the beach........i moved there in 1979 from Maryland where the famous Ocean City is; and without question from the original Beach Bunny (i'm 81 years old) Folly is the the very best beach in the world.........i never want it to grow into another Myrtle Beach because its perfect the way it is........I lived in SC for about 10 years and its wonderful....The water is warmer by far than is OC, Md. great for kids the waves don't knock you all over the place..........and you can find sand dollars galore..................and there's a wonderful old Morris Island Light House......the beauty has brought tears to my eyes.....really.........xo........

I moved to Folly Beach back in the late 1980's, just in time for front row seats to Hurricane Hugo. At the time Folly suffered from a second rate syndrome due to the popularity and upscale appeal of Sullivans Island. It was also a gay destination point due to it's beauty and low key appeal. Great place for beach viewing but I have to mention that it was perhaps the most racist place I have ever been to in my life. The people who lived there were closed minded and made my life miserable.
There were a few people who recognized that many of the police officers, who used to follow me from block to block when I went to work in the morning, were not responsible public servants and worked to change this but overall the place was a fertile racist holding tank.
Although one officer approached me unexpectedly and made a genuine apology for the actions of his colleagues, (which touched me deeply) I still find it hard to have positive sympathies for this part of the South Carolina low country.
Could not wait to move to the city of Charleston proper, which turned out to harbor a lot of the same characteristics. Folly Beach great place to visit in the daytime, "Be out of town by sundown". (actual quote from the acting sheriff at the time to one of my friends).

It realy PO's me that these media have to announce every thing that was great get away or fishing hole and hunting woods in what state,,,I have over 50 years seen some of the best honey hole's
get wiped out by these ediots,,,now this beach is out for the whole world to park on,
KEN Jul 24th 2011 1:12PM
I agree with both Cindy & Sandy. I have lived in N Myrtle Beach since 1992, but I
also love Edisto Island. There's a beautiful state park, where I took some of
my best photos at sunrise. I like the quietness, for the most part--even the Burger
King closed at 8:00 PM. when I was there. South Carolina has great beaches
with something for everyone.
rosemary hirsch Jul 22nd 2011 12:10PM
Growing up in South Carolina, Folly Beach was a great secret, known only to native Carolina "sand-lapers," as we were called. Edisto Beach was quiet and residential, not a party beach. For true commercial fun with the children go to Myrtle Beach, S.C. For a more secluded upscale beach adventure complete with a small airport and great golf courses head for North Myrtle Beach, S.C. For very expensive fun and the beach, you can go to Hilton Head Island, S.C.

All of the GD Yankees will turn this into FLA.
Paul Jul 22nd 2011 12:21PM
You missed the best one, Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach. What Ocean Beach, NY was like in the good days, but with cars. Many restaurant have two for one deals during the summer.
Phil MacCracin Jul 22nd 2011 12:43PM
Paul... are you drunk?
Or did someone pay you / give you a free trip to write this crap?
I've been to beaches all over the East Coast, from Nantucket to Key West and Folly is NOT one of the best by far. One of the dirtiest - maybe?
The Tides is "a converted Holiday Inn" - it more like old & shabby Best West.
The hotel and associated beach is "drunk ville" and dirty. The restaurants are filthy and the service can be good but is generally crap. Prices are at tourist trap levels for everything.
The "crowds not sloppy drunk". Are you sure you were on Folly Beach? Every time I was there the beach was full of power drinkers who could not speak coherently by 2-3pm.
For people reading this - I've been there, don't waste your time or money.
sipp12 Jul 22nd 2011 2:15PM
Paul is correct. I was born in Charleston and spend a great deal of my youth at Folly when it truly was a Great beach. These days it is just as you decribed it and not worth your time!!! This article is total BS.

We LOVE Folly beach...so much that we got married on the beach (barefoot) this past spring! It was awesome we rented a beach house for a week and got married on the beach with the waves rolling in. It was perfect! Plus it's close to downtown Charleston....hang out at Folly during the day and then hit downtown Charleston at night for some awesome nightlife!
