Experience America this summer with Andrew Burmon

There is a tourist trap in South Carolina called South of the Border. A combination truck stop, motel, roadside attraction, carnival and snack stand, it's high kitsch of the first order, bordering on exploitative with its stereotypically Mexican "mascot" Pedro. A couple days before the Fourth of July, when I drove through, it's also a bonanza for fireworks, all manner of which are legal in South Carolina, even if they're sold at exit one, just south of the border with North Carolina.
It started as a half-way point on the haul down to Florida, a convenient place for New York- and Boston-area families to spend the night while driving to Walt Disney World and Miami. But faster speed limits, not to mention cheaper flights, a growing number of chain hotel outposts and the economic downturn, have left South of the Border as more of a curiosity than a much-needed overnight waypoint. It's hokiness is no longer a draw but rather something to be snickered at after you get back in your car and continue down I-95.
One saving grace is Fort Pedro, an explosives depot masquerading as a fireworks stand. A $699 collection of bombs, mortars and various other sparklers was the most expensive package I saw; simple firecrackers seemed unavailable in any quantity shy of 1,000. Packages as bright as the magnesium blooms they promised went on, row after row, as giddy shoppers stacked their carts. One group had assembled an arsenal so formidable it seemed destined for either resale in a control state or the ultimate end to the chunk of South Carolina in which they'd be ignited.
My friend Rob, who was along for this part of the ride, suggested we buy dozens of sparklers to hand out during the Fourth, the better to make friends with. Our best find were yard-long behemoths, in a pack of eight, for about a buck a pop. We declined to purchase super-light hot air balloon-inspired lamps, like you see in Southeast Asia, for fear that we'd spark yet another Lowcountry brush fire. I did buy a South of the Border bumper sticker for a dime.
The rest of the attractions were by turns unappealing or disappointing. The reptile house didn't seem worth an outlay of $8. The hat shop had precious few hilarious headpieces. The most that can be said of the ice cream stand is that it serves ice cream.
Visitors can ride to the top of the famed South of the Border sign, taking in the view from the "sombrero." But the open road was waiting. We didn't feel the need to hang around any longer: we had real stops to make.

I drive by there all the time. My wife works at Ft. Bragg and I am still in South Carolina. I personally think it is tacky and looks runned down when I drive past it. The road signs drive me nuts and they are not even funny.

Pedro says, "lighten up" it's a tacky tourist spot on 95 south. If you cant figure out what it is and appreciate it for what it is, don't stop keep driving till the next truck stop with all the charm of well..... the next truck stop.
It's been around a long damn time for a reason, it makes people happy who go there and buy their fireworks. another of the great American roadside Barnum and Bailey wannabes. take it for what it is.
end of rant.

I recall the endless miles of billboards letting you know just how close you were getting to the place. Many were clever. The final one said something like "You Just Passed South of the Border.....TURN AROUND!!"
I also recall a small family owned restaurant not far from there called The Pink House. Ring a bell????
c turner Jul 21st 2011 4:47PM
I remember the Pink House. up 301. Hard to get a table on Sundays

As we go by South of the Border four times a year, we always take a picture from the cell phone and send it to our children and grandchildren to let them know of our progress. We rarely stop but when we do, it's always for ice cream!!!!

If you dont like S.O.B., dont stop!! It's not a tourist trap but a tourist attraction. If you dont like the prices, dont buy.
Geoff Jul 18th 2011 2:50PM
Been by there at least 40 times at all different times of the day and never see anyone there. Don't know how they stay in business. BTW, gas is cheeper both before and after SOB.
alice Jul 18th 2011 2:38PM
the signs about 100 miles out are tacky to say the least. south of the border has the highest gas prices that is all along I 95 so dont ever stop there. the place is filty and is due for a complete overhaul to say the least. or maybe its just time to tear the whole place down and rebuild. all the restaurants and motels are filthy. the merchandise you van buy there if you want to waste your money is horrible. so why bother even spending your time here at all. go down the road and you will get better gas prices, better healthier food, better and cleaner hotel/motel accomodations or even a cleaner campground to spend your night. i would never stop her again... the last time i did it was about 15 or so years ago and i thought i saw all kinds of roaches and other crawly stuff in my food, etc. never again. we laugh when we see the sign and say ok pedro i will just pass you up for a cleaner place to eat, gas up, and rest at. hey even rest stops are cleaner than south of the border...all you can sy about this place is go away and build a cleaner place on the highway for people to stop at. evne the truckers for the most part have said this recently. they no longer stop here and go for cleaner places to eat, and rest at...this place is real garbage.....
Kit Jul 18th 2011 2:44PM
What I am trying to figure out is your favorite place is New Orleans...the French Quarter is not a rip-off tourist trap? The Quarter, in my humble opinion, is not only trashy, it's still nasty and dangerous, although historic, just like South of the Border. I guess you just too cool to like or understand something that just is what it is, it certainly isn't out to impress you.
Arizona traveler Jul 18th 2011 2:55PM
I read this because I thought it was near the Mexican border! So tell me, are the things they sell there made in Mexico or like everywhere else, made in China?
Bruce Jul 18th 2011 2:41PM
Why does AOL feel the necessity to try to destroy someones business.
If you don't like something, just don't go back.
Dr. J Jul 18th 2011 2:59PM
Just so everyone knows, South Of The Border has been in business since 1950, at a time when there was no such nonsense as Political Correctness, and Pedro, for the first 40 years, rather well matched the Hollywood image of the Sombrero-wearing Mexican bandido. That little bit of the country's culture still exists, while a lot of our nation's common sense has taken a siesta, so Pedro and the whole resort comes off more as nostalgic than authentic, but it is still a fun stop worth making along I-95.
Loveitorleaveit Jul 18th 2011 3:01PM
I guess if the writer felt "trapped", then evidently his attitude had a collision with southern hospitality and someone locked him up inside one of the clean restrooms.
It must be hard for him to find quality material to write.
jack harlan Jul 19th 2011 1:55PM
apparently anyone who stops at south of the border dont know the good things in life it a sleeze place that rips people off gasoline and all there are no bargins there including motel i stayed at with bugs dont know how this place is still open
megan Jul 18th 2011 2:50PM
Honestly....the best thing about SOB
is the truly enteratining signs for hundreds of miles coming South down I-95.
I am always a little perplexed however that the signs seems so new, witty, clever and up to date when the rest stop itself seems so old and run down. I truly do not know why they don't spend a bit of money and get the place back up and running., We travel from North to South at least four times a year and we would be happy to stop and spend a little time and money if they cleaned the place up a bit and lowered the outrageous gas prices.....I do remember however, the very first time I went to SOB...it was Spring Break 1973....a car load of us from a college in NY headed down to Ft. Lauderdale...We stopped at SOB....It was "hopping" at the time and I have many fond memories of the visit and the trip.
