Experience America this summer with Andrew Burmon

There is a tourist trap in South Carolina called South of the Border. A combination truck stop, motel, roadside attraction, carnival and snack stand, it's high kitsch of the first order, bordering on exploitative with its stereotypically Mexican "mascot" Pedro. A couple days before the Fourth of July, when I drove through, it's also a bonanza for fireworks, all manner of which are legal in South Carolina, even if they're sold at exit one, just south of the border with North Carolina.
It started as a half-way point on the haul down to Florida, a convenient place for New York- and Boston-area families to spend the night while driving to Walt Disney World and Miami. But faster speed limits, not to mention cheaper flights, a growing number of chain hotel outposts and the economic downturn, have left South of the Border as more of a curiosity than a much-needed overnight waypoint. It's hokiness is no longer a draw but rather something to be snickered at after you get back in your car and continue down I-95.
One saving grace is Fort Pedro, an explosives depot masquerading as a fireworks stand. A $699 collection of bombs, mortars and various other sparklers was the most expensive package I saw; simple firecrackers seemed unavailable in any quantity shy of 1,000. Packages as bright as the magnesium blooms they promised went on, row after row, as giddy shoppers stacked their carts. One group had assembled an arsenal so formidable it seemed destined for either resale in a control state or the ultimate end to the chunk of South Carolina in which they'd be ignited.
My friend Rob, who was along for this part of the ride, suggested we buy dozens of sparklers to hand out during the Fourth, the better to make friends with. Our best find were yard-long behemoths, in a pack of eight, for about a buck a pop. We declined to purchase super-light hot air balloon-inspired lamps, like you see in Southeast Asia, for fear that we'd spark yet another Lowcountry brush fire. I did buy a South of the Border bumper sticker for a dime.
The rest of the attractions were by turns unappealing or disappointing. The reptile house didn't seem worth an outlay of $8. The hat shop had precious few hilarious headpieces. The most that can be said of the ice cream stand is that it serves ice cream.
Visitors can ride to the top of the famed South of the Border sign, taking in the view from the "sombrero." But the open road was waiting. We didn't feel the need to hang around any longer: we had real stops to make.

We went through there on our honeymoon! It's a fun part of our memories

SOUTH OF THE BOARDER WAS ALWAYS OUR HALF WAY POINT FROM TAMPA FL TO EASTON PA. ALWAYS HAD TO STOP EITHER FOR THE NIGHT OR JUST TO TAKE A BREAK WITH THE LEGS. PIT STOP AS WE ALWAYS CALLED IT. IT WAS ALWAYS THE 4 OF US MOM DAD NANNY AND MYSELF. NANNY AND I WOULD HAVE A CONTEST TO SEE WHO SAW THE FIRST BRIGHT SIGN. MOST OF THE TIME I WAS ASLEEP IN THE BACK SEAT. BUT I THINK NANNY ALWAYS LET ME SEE THE FIRST SIGN. OH THE MEMORIES OF THE SOUTH OF THE BOARDER SIGNS. NOW WE GO OTHER DIRECTIONS AND DON'T GET TO STOP THERE ANY MORE.. IT'S KINDA TACKY THERE BUT ALWAYS FUN TO LOOK AROUND TO STRETCH THE LEGS A BIT. ICE CREAM IS GOOD TO. WELL IS WAS THE LAST TIME WE STOPPED THERE WHICH WAS ABOUT 5 YRS AGO. AND BOY CAN I SPEND MONEY AT THE FIREWORKS SHOP WAHOOO... MISS THAT TOO.

Another AOL hype-line on a story. It's not really a 'tourist trap'. It's got lots of cheap souvenirs and the whole place is tacky personified, but it;s not like they're pretending to be anything but a roadside attraction with promotional signs stretching for hundreds of miles. They don't really rip you off. As someone said, it's a place to go once just to satisfy your curiosity.
Now that I think about it, AOL is slipping.
The headline should read: 'Has South of the Border gone too far this time?'
C'mon guys, we expect a certain journalistic standard. Zero.
mikeywes Jul 16th 2011 7:47AM
It is a tourist trap...no bargains, stuff guaranteed to get your kids aslobberin and sugar sugar sugar. Not that it is a cultural icon.....everyone counts the signs and knows about Pedro.....American sleeeze at it's I95 best. I love it. Better than Vegas used to be
sally steffen Jul 18th 2011 3:06PM
What do you expect from the "new liberal AOL" now owned by huffington post? Too bad - I have been with AOL since its inception and just loved it. I read my news from Drudge and TheBlaze now.
Razzal Jul 18th 2011 3:55PM
So sally if that is where you read your news now why are you trolling on here? Nothing better to do perhaps?
Don Jul 18th 2011 4:52PM
I agree with you! AOL has slipped mightily ever since they let leftwing HuffPost take over. We no longer get news, we get propaganda. And we get stories by a bunch of underaged know-it-alls who in reality have little or no life experince. I'm sure this will not be permitted to be posted!!
Mary Jul 18th 2011 5:07PM
I love it there! Where else can you see so much cheap tacky stuff in one place? I have pictures of my girls in the giant sombreros and next to the white shark statue, all over the place, really. C'mon, this article is a little too harsh - what's he expecting - Disney? When we travelled to Florida every year when I was growing up, we had a great time taking turns reading the signs and saying how many more miles it was until we reached SOTB. Great memories!

I remember going there as a kid, in the 1950s and even meeting Phil Rizzuto, as he was on his way to spring training. Several years ago, driving south with my own children, we decided to stop and we were reminded that it was as schlocky a place as could every be found. Still, it makes for a distance marker...all those reminders how many miles until you get there.
Dieselfixer Jul 19th 2011 5:53AM
Try Sleepy Bear's Campgroung at I 95 exit 17. A nice place with a pool, miniture golf and real frendly staff.
carolina_d Jul 19th 2011 4:39PM
Actually, I think it was AOL who bought the HufPo! Not the other way around.
carol Jul 16th 2011 6:51AM
We stay in Florida 2 months in the winter each year ,hopefully 3 this year...We pull a fifth wheel and always stay in the campground at South of the Border as our half way stop...we don't get to patronize any of the places as we usually pull in at 9pm and leave by 8 am..but the campground is very reasonable about 20 dollars for the nights stay and it's a great little spot...check in is easy and friendly and the campground is gated, clean bathrooms and hookups are in good condition..
Jerri Jul 16th 2011 7:03AM
I have been there twice as a tourist and I was not trapped. Just a place to stop on the road while making a trip. Like most Tourist Traps, and there are many, you do not have to purchase anything.
It is a gawdy marketing trick to get you in there to purchase items or spend money; whether you spend or do not spend is up to you. The kids love the gawdienss of the place; the adults maybe not so much.
Mike Jul 16th 2011 7:07AM
Come on now, South Of The Border is a must stop no matter how many times you go back and forth. Give it some credit instead of trashy it. They get your attention and bring you in, just like any other attraction, these people dont rip you off. I have been there about 4 times in the past 20 years or so and always it is a treat.
Virginia Jul 16th 2011 7:31AM
Oh come on, we love stopping at South of the Border on our way down to Florida every year. It reminds us we are half way there. We love the shops and resting our legs a bit. It was always a great place even when I was a child. It's an icon to us.
erma Jul 16th 2011 7:51AM
oh come on. it is a fun place to stop and a marker of how far you have come. been there several times and with my now grown kids, give it a break no one has to stop there.
cathy Jul 16th 2011 8:00AM
I remember South of the Border from the 50's (long before an interstate highway). It was on the route from Piedmont NC to Myrtle Beach and it was a small road side tent stop for drinks and a few souvenirs. Later I remember when a building was constructed where you could buy souvenirs and food. I've not stopped since it became such a large "attraction". Does not appeal to me.
jim Jul 16th 2011 8:05AM
You can say what you want about south of the border, i been traveling I95 for about 40 years, i stopped there once when i was with my parrents in the 60s, i didnt much care for it then and i dont now, if i want fireworks i can find better deals and fireworks off most exits in south and north carolina, its not what they make it out to be, save your money and do something that will give you more for your hard earned buck
