Experience America this summer with Andrew Burmon

You've seen the stickers. White ovals, with the trio of letters "OBX," an American riff on European nationality decals, they're a sign of allegiance to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I always found them annoying: How could some mid-Atlantic beach really be that wonderful? And why would you want to brag about your vacation on the back of your car?
Turning onto the beach road in Kill Devil Hills, with the dunes to my left, houses on stilts looking out over the water and kids slowly pedaling cruiser bikes, the reason became apparent. The Outer Banks are so wonderful, you can't help but evangelize on their behalf. Here are six reasons why.
The history: This is where aviation got its start, when Orville and Wilbur Wright finally got their Flyer into the air for a series of short trips on December 17, 1903. The site, commonly called Kitty Hawk but now in the incorporated city of Kill Devil Hills, is a protected national memorial, administered by the National Park Service. For just $4 a person, you can run along the actual path of the first powered flights in human history. Wilbur's longest ride lasted 59 seconds; it took me 48 seconds to run the 852 feet.
The beach: It's not the widest beach I've ever seen, but the Outer Banks offers miles of uninterrupted strands along the Atlantic. Because the barrier islands here are so narrow, you're never more than a few minutes from the water. Don't leave your rental house or hotel without a swimsuit.
The lighthouses: For a place known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic for all its shipwrecks, there are plenty of lighthouses to see. The most famous is on Cape Hatteras, a black-and-white tower that tops 200 feet. It's open for climbs in season, as are others like the Currituck Beach and Ocracoke lighthouses.
The activities: One reason the Wright Brothers chose the Outer Banks for their experiments in flight is the area's consistent ocean breezes. Those same winds make for excellent kite surfing, parasailing and even hang gliding. Kitty Hawk Kites is the leader in teaching visitors to hang glide in a single day at Jockey's Ridge State Park, where sand dunes provide soft landings for students.
The people: I was fortunate enough to stay with the parents of a friend of a friend, a family that's lived in Kill Devil Hills for 31 years. In a house built on stilts, and listing slightly from hurricane damage, my hosts shared stories of the place and its cast of characters-over beers pulled from an ice-filled cooler on their screened-in porch. For dinner, soft-shell crabs were fried in a pot of hot oil and served along side the best fried green tomatoes I've ever tasted. When I said I couldn't thank them enough for the hospitality, they asked why I couldn't just stay another night.
The ring toss: My hosts introduced me to ring toss. It's not the carnival game but a test of dexterity that involves swinging a small metal loop tied to a string across the lawn to a hook mounted on a tree. It's by turns infuriating and magical and maddeningly addictive. I'd seen it once before, in Maine, but not with the ubiquity it has in the Outer Banks. A trip here without it wouldn't be complete.

Wwe have been to the Outer Banks on 2 different occasions, and I can't wait to go back again. What we do is wait til the end of August, after the kiddies have gone back to school, you can get some fantastic "end of summer deals" at the "Sea Ranch" in Kill Devil Hills. I love the barrier islands, can't wait till we go back again. We are from S.C. we both hate Myrtle Beach, love Charleston and Beufort beaches, Fripp Island, & Edisto. My son lives in Florida, and the beaches there are actually prettier, meaning the water is more of a turquoisy blue, & the sand is whiter. But OBX is the best!!!!♥♥

Try Ocean Isle Beach NC. A 1/2 dozen miles from Myrtle Beach SC but a different world.
sherrmorr Jul 12th 2011 5:57PM
You have to go to Elizabeth's Cafe & Winery in Duck. It is WONDERFUL. Every morsel is like a piece of heaven. It was vote in the top 25 restaurants in the US.
It isn't cheap and you will need a reservation. I love Outer Banks. Myrtle Beach has become so ...... pedestrian?
Jenny Jul 12th 2011 7:10PM
There must be a lot of South Carolinians who share ur hatred of Myrtle Beach b/c I see so many South Carolina license plates here on the OBX :)!!

No one has mentioned the terrific restaurants! There are too many to list, but a dinner at Colington Cafe is a must. Also, take a ferry ride to Occrocke and lunch by the water, visit the charming town of Manteo with lunch at Full Moon Cafe ( a micro brewery). While on Manteo Island, go to Wanchese and buy some great shrimp and scallops to take home. You can get them individually flash frozen, ready for your freezer. Also on Manteo Island you can visit the Elizebethian Gardens. And, of course, take a visit to Duck and have lunch or dinner at any of their fine restaurants. The Corolla area has the Whalehead Club to tour and is next to Currituck Light.

My children all love the OBX, if fact my youngest son was married there 7 years ago. All I remember is very cold, rough water and a million horse flies that bite you until you bleed! Very happy to return to Deerfield Beach in Florida! No flies, beautiful beaches and warm ocean!!!
Dee Jul 14th 2011 5:08PM
The problem is now everyone knows how beautiful the area is. Try to stay away from Duck (even though it is great) it can take over an hour to get through this area in the summer. If possible keep your vacation to April, May, Sept or Oct. Really good months for the OBX

Pls quit telling everyone how great the Outer Banks are! It has been our vacuation spot for 18 years and we love it. Only problem is it is getting more crowed every year. That is one reason you won't see an OBX sticker on my car
Brian Jul 12th 2011 4:48PM
The OBX will continue to get more crowded with each passing year and there isn't much you can do to prevent that. But to "quit telling everyone how great the Out Bankes are!" is somewhat selfish just because you consider it your own vacation spot.
The OBX is one of the very few beaches on the east coast that allows you to bring your vehicle out on the beach, and one of the few that allows dogs on the beach - luxurys that many take for granted that are no longer available to those living north of NC.
Finally, the OBX is peaceful and a great way for our kids to experience something great outdoors. Between the lighthouses, beach, wildlife (including the wild horses), and landscape there is much to see; and it sure is nice to see kids actually being kids once again - rather than machines glued to their electronic devices.

YOU CAN NOtT DRIVE YOUR CAR ON THE BEACH, (THIS AIN'T DAYTONA), AND THE LAST TIME I TOOK MY VERY SMALL DOG ON THE BEACH (IN MY ARMS), I WAS WARNED NOT TO BRING HER BACK OR THEY WOULD TAKE HER FROM ME. THEY ACTUALLY DID THE WARNING WHILE I WAS RUNNING AWAY FROM THEM BECAUSE THEY THREATNED TO TAKE HER RIGHT OUT OF MY ARMS RIGHT THEN AND THERE.

We have been going to the Outer Banks for 18 years. We started when our children were young heading down to Avon. After 5 years at Avon our girls found out that there was more things for them to do in Nags Head. We've been going to Nags Head for the past 13 years. We've had places on the Links golf course, beachfront, oceanside and for the past 3 years on the sound. We love the sound and the view of Roanoke Island with the sunset every evening.
We love the people, the beach and the fact that you don't need a beach tag. There are lifeguards but not like at the Jersey shore, they let you swim and have fun. And for those that want to fish or surf, it's no problem. Everyone respects the other persons territory. I also enjoy being able to have an alcoholic beverage on the beach. For those that have pets, the beach is also a welcome place. Again, the people are respectful and take care of their pets. Nothing like watching a big golden retreiver running into the water to fetch a ball or frisbee. They seem tireless.
The food is very good and we have our favorite place, Argyles, where the owners are as friendly and accomodating as you can expect anywhere and the food is exceptional and value priced.
We go down with a group of people and we always do an annual "guys" fishing trip out of Hatteras Harbor on the Big Eye where we always catch fish. Those days always lead to a great fresh fish BBQ back at home. We've caught tuna, dolphin, marlin, amberjack and wahoo and we always have a great time.
It is further than Pirates Cove but it is one of those traditions we hold near and dear to our hearts.
All in all, give me the Outer Banks over the Jersey shore any day.

can you recommend another area so I do not invade your lovely state and beach. I have lived most of my life in CA and it has been invaded just like your has but CA is now broke, thank you Arnold, and gtangs and crime and I would like to relocate. Any suggestion? Not interested in Florida though.
brian Jul 12th 2011 7:02PM
Sandbridge beach in virginia beach. It is up the coast just over the state line and is the same, quiet, beutiful beach, houses on stilts but close to 'stuff' if you want such as the resort area williamsburg bush gardens etc, but it is just peace and quit at sandbridge.

You certainly have cause for concerns in CA! We are native New Yorkers, lived in FL for 13 years and are now happily and permanently located in Charleston, SC. We have a little bit of everything. Sports, the Arts, Festivals, great restaurants, beaches, night life, etc. We've been here 5 years and have never been happier. What things are important to you and I can give you some suggestions for different areas. Any area that has beaches will have heavier traffic and tourists. However, we don't have all the commercialism that Myrtle Beach has. Median age here is 38. No "heaven's waiting room" here!

I would recommend the Mountains of East Tennesssee. Just stay away from the big cities like Knoxville, (traffic and road construction all the time).

7. Sam & Omie's
marcitecture Jul 12th 2011 5:01PM
Yep Sam & Omies one of those places that has reaaaaaally bad food, just terrible stay away, heed my words.
Oh and those ridges someone posted are "dunes". They're supposed to protect the beach somehow, but just get in the way of your view. Another reason to stay away !!!
mark Jul 12th 2011 4:40PM
The outer Banks are horrible. It's a terrible mosquito and black fly infested strip of wasteland that is constantly being either rained upon or torn up from north easterly storms. The food is horrible, the people are horrid. It's hard to get to, hard to get out of, nothing to do, no where to shop, nothing to buy. Fish don't even swim along the shore but divert waaaaaaay out in the ocean just to by pass it and go to Myrtle Beach or Va. Beach. Do yourself a favor and never and I mean neeeeeever go to that godforbidden place !!!!!!!!! Really, it's just terrible awful. it stinks too.
Lily FrogLegs Jul 12th 2011 4:44PM
So.....you live there and want everyone else to stay away?
Ted Jul 14th 2011 7:08PM
Folks usually find what they are looking for. Look for nice people and you will find them, look for horrid people and you will find those too. Ditto with food, water, the weather, etc.
