TSA workers are blaming body scanners for cancer; D.C. public interest group calls for independent reviews
Workers for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) from locations around the country are reporting higher-than-usual rates of cancer, strokes and heart disease amongst employees who work on or near new full-body scanners. The Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington, D.C. recently obtained information under the Freedom of Information Act that shows TSA employees at Boston's Logan International Airport reported a suspected "cancer cluster" to their supervisors, only to have the higher-ups downplay the problem and refuse their request for dosimeters, badges that monitor radiation exposure and are routinely used in other industries where workers come in contact with X-rays and other potentially harmful forms of radiation, states Seattle Weekly.
EPIC has filed a lawsuit to suspend the deployment of body scanners at US airports, pending an independent review.
TSA's official statement is that they have "implemented stringent safety protocols to ensure that technology used at airports to screen people and property is safe for all passengers, as well as the TSA workforce."
Still, existing studies cannot confirm or deny that the full body scanners are safe. Are frequent travelers also at risk?
"We've said to TSA, 'If there's all this info that you have that can show people than they're not at risk, that the levels are that low, why not share that information?' It has given employees the idea that if they're not given the information, there must be something to hide," said Milly Rodriguez, an occupational health and safety specialist for the American Federation of Government Employees.
Reports from Johns Hopkins University and the National Institute of Standards and Technology--both of which were "publicly characterized" by TSA, according to EPIC--found that the radiation from the scanners could exceed the "general public dose limit."
Still, proving a direct correlation between radiation emitted from the scanners and cancer or disease in any working population is difficult.
"[Cancer clusters] are very difficult to show," Rodriguez told Seattle Weekly yesterday. "There are so many things that can cause cancer in a group of workers. They live in same community, so it could be something there. They're all in similar age groups. It's just so difficult to isolate the cause."

I guess those machine back scatter your DNA.

I'd say the TSA agents are getting what they have coming to them for treating people so terribly. A person that cares about others, respects the dignity of others, and doesn't get a thrill out of manning a porno booth, could never do that job. While they are sexually assaulting travelers bodies in various ways they are missing things like knives & guns in luggage and letting people fly without proper boarding passes. You will never convince me this is about safety. It is domination, control, & humiliation. What else can it be when a 95 year old cancer patient has to remove her "underwear" in order to fly. I never hear of any complaints from military age middle-eastern men. They must be rolling out the red carpet for them.

The NWO gov, that really runs our country, wants as many people sick, on meds/drugs, or dead. So they have implemented another way to do so. Those scanners are equivalent to about 200 x-rays at once. So of course after being exposed time and time again many people will get cancer. Get a pat down, remember the terrorist can just walk across our borders, so why are we the American public being forced fed radiation?

had the body scan in March because of a knee replacement. I guess if you want to fly this is what you have to to do. I did ask to see the exray and TSA said no but very politely.

what sucks is that most people that work in the airport have to get scanned everyday.. especially those that work near the the loading area..(on the other side of the scanner)

* Use them and you could get cancer, don't use them and you can get killed via terrorism.
* A good TSA pat down gets you molested, no TSA pat down can get you killed via terrorism.
* You see where I'm going with this......?

That type of logical fallacy is called the false dilemma (aka the "either-or fallacy"). It's presenting only two conclusions when there are far more, such as presenting the argument that we either have to be violated by screeners or killed by terrorists.
There is a happy medium of liberty and security. They crossed that line five miles back.

And these are the people (the government) that we're going to entrust with our healthcare??????

Folks, first off, I can't say if these machines do cause cancer or heart problems! They haven't been in use long enough for any effects to show up. It sure makes a good lawsuit for an attorney though when a person has a heart attack or gets cancer if they work for the TSA now doesn't it?

I beleive that the TSA workers should be issued Dose Meters. That way everyone would find out if the machines are dangerous ornot. Simple solution.

Technology and human nature (namely greed) is killing us.
Want to be safe on the plane--have a dose of radiation.
Want to have perfect greens--watch the workers in hazmat suits spray the crops.
Want to have "fresh" air--just plug in or spray those toxic chemicals. Want to monitor your electric bill--wait till they force the smart meters down your throat, which are potentally harmful to the electro-magnetic fields of home wiring and human occupants.
Want "fresh smelling" clothes--add a highly toxic dryer sheet to your already fragranced load. (watch out for that chemical build up as it can set fire to your machine)
Human nature causes it, human nature allows it to go on.

I neither agree nor disagree with what's being claimed here, but if someone's claiming that the whole-body scanners are giving him/her cancer, I say prove it. Like any legal issue, the burden of proof is on the plaintiff. Otherwise, it's just an unfounded, baseless and questionable allegation.
In this day and age, just about everything in this world is giving someone somewhere some form of cancer. Get used to it.

NO CHIT!! your being exposed to 1000 times more xrays then with a normal xray!!
