I can think of 2 airports right now, #1: Congonhas, Sao Paulo- Brazil's old airport is built in the middle of the city. At both end of the runways, you have houses and avenues. Some years ago, a plane lost control and crashed into a gas station located at one end. #2 old airport way down south in Ushuaia (southern tip of Argentina), airport was used for both commercial and military planes. Since military planes were smaller, the airport was built at the foot of a mountain...too close to the mountain. There are photos taken from the top of the mountain were you see a commercial jet, after making a steep turn/descent, heading down towards the runway. Calling it scary is falling short of a description.
