Experience America this summer with Andrew Burmon

The funny thing about road trips is that you end up spending a lot of time behind the wheel of your car. There's always another city to get to, asphalt to be consumed, another waypoint to hit. So by the time I pulled into Watkins Glen, a small town in New York's Finger Lakes region, I was ready to get out and stretch my legs.
Fortunately, the village is home to one of the coolest state parks in New York, hidden in plain sight, right off the main drag.
Watkins Glen State Park is home to a "staircase of waterfalls" that cascade down through innumerable layers of shale and sandstone, guarded by towering cliff faces from which heavy drops of condensation fall, splashing on hikers' heads. It's a Lost World here, with electric green ferns dangling, water whooshing over ledges and swirling in natural Jacuzzis, mist hanging heavily in the air and amateur naturalists armed with telescoping aluminum walking sticks and floppy, broad-brimmed hats. (Another secret of the park is that the pathway along Glen Creek, while sometimes slippery, is hardly a technical hike.)
The park is a verdant escape, a place for a one-hour break from reality, planted right in the heart of a town best known as a car-racing capital, the home to Watkins Glen International, one of the country's most storied road tracks. There's no doubt the park gets crowded on the weekends, but during my Wednesday morning visit? I was happy to have my time outside the car to myself.

Couldn't agree more - the Finger Lakes make the perfect NY weekend getaway. See my take here... http://www.jennifer-travels.com/?p=232

My home and office are 30 miles from Watkins Glen. I love that town. I go through and around it on my motorcycle many times a year. I also have clients there. The town is at the south end of Seneca Lake and has the Seneca Lake Wine Trail around with 40+ member wineries around the lake. A great lake with boating, fishing etc. It has the amazing state park as Paul has vlogged. One of the best in the state and region. And there is the race track which holds Nascar and IndyCar type racing as well as other events. Not bad for a tiny town in a rural county. We seem to take these things for granted in the Finger lakes Regions. Other great towns on lakes in this region, Ithaca, Auburn, Geneva and Hammondsport!

Watkins Glen is a fantastic place to see beautiful waterfalls, but don't stop there. The Finger Lakes region is dotted with spectacular waterfalls - each a unique beauty, thanks to the glaciers that scoured the area eons ago. Pick up a copy of the guidebook "200 Waterfalls in Central & Western New York - A Finders' Guide" and you can make a fun vacation of sleuthing waterfalls. http://www.footprintpress.com

Michael H, that soundtrack is way cool, anytime, one of my all time favorites, just like Watkins Glenn and Skaneatles, also Cazenovia, all in the Finger lakes for those who don't know.

Watkins Glen is also the home of the "Farm Sanctuary," a wonderful place for rescued farm animals to live out their lives in peace and safety. Check it out while you are there visiting the falls and learn of their plight.

Also, not to far away and south of Rochester is Letchworth State Park which is called the Grand Canyon of the East. There is a dam at one end and it is 17 miles long, the deepest point is 600ft and you can actually white water raft in the spring thanks to the snow melt off. There are hiking trails down to the bottom of the canyon and look outs at the top where you can see all the hawks soaring in the breeze. You can see where the water has craved out thw walls of the canyon. It's beautiful there and I miss going there every Columbus Day weekend.

How amazing Letchworth is and yet seems almost unknown to most. Ive lived the last decade in Manhattan but grew up in Syracuse and have lived several years in Albany and in Rochester where thanks to my sister I discovered this fantastical gem. Ive spent many hours up on a grassy knoll with friends listening to the crushing whisper of the water falling oblivious to the frenetic pace with which the rest of humankind scurries about at on the face of this grand rock. It truly is a place that helps put everything back in its proper perspective, which I was just reminded of thanks to this posting... Letchworth is a win!

I WENT TO AIR FORCE BASIC TRAINING THERE IF 1955. SAMPSON AIR FORCE BASE. FINGER LAKES, NY.

Comment One: What is a "technical hike"?
Comment Two: I've been to Letchworth--40 years ago. Great place and great memories. Upstate NY is super--Catskills, Adirondacks, Berkshires, Letchworth, Finger Lakes.... Too bad the state government is so screwed up.

Fifteen years ago my upper NY-raised wife dragged me kicking and screaming from Arizona to the Finger Lakes. What could be more scenic than the Grand Canyon state I asked.
Well, that would be the Finger Lakes region!
Watkins Glen is unforgetable; Letchworth State Park beautiful; throw in the hundreds of wineries, dozens of top flight golf courses, the rolling farmland, antique stores, diners and the beauty of all the Finger Lakes and I had the vacation of my life! Every bit the equal of going to Hawaii at a third the cost.
Donald Miller Jul 30th 2011 5:42PM
"What could be more scenic than the Grand Canyon State?" Why, New York State of course! New York State wins hands down. Not just at one place like the Grand Canyon but all over the whole entire state. Anywhere that you go in the state is going to delight your eyes.
Except New York City of course which is a man made sight.
I've been all over the United States and never have I seen another river as broad as the St. Lawrence River where it exits Lake Ontario. (Another spetacular sight in itself) At that point the St. Lawrence River makes the Missippissi River look like a trickling creek.

I grew up about 35 minutes from Watkins glen, and hiking the Gorge is a beautiful experience. I now live in Rochester, and I have to boast: the Finger Lakes region is one of the most beautiful areas I have ever been to. Everyone should come check it out!
