Tasmania might be an easier substitute for those aching to get to Antarctica. I've just returned from Tasmania as part of a round-the-world trip, and the proximity of the two is mind-boggling.
"Tassie" -- as it's referred to in Australia -- is that nation's southernmost state. It's so far south, it's a gateway to Antarctica. Some of its wildllife (birds, sea lions) are similar, since it's in the same geographical neighborhood. Yet it has four seasons, and winters are relatively mild compared to the States. It's ruggedly beautiful, and has been called the Alaska of Australia.
And this plus: a chance to encounter Tasmanian devils. These critters may sound ferocious, but they're actually shy, and are in danger of disappearing.
