Despite what the people above say, Mexico is relatively safe. I currently live in Mexico and traveled to many popular tourist sites including Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Ensenada, and many more. I am not going to say that the crime rate hasn't gone up, because it has due to Mexico actually enforcing more security and trying to eliminate criminal activity. I am sorry for the loss of the tourist who passed away while visiting Mexico, but it could happen anywhere really.
When visiting Mexico, like any place, take precautions of not carrying much cash, do not go out drinking a lot and getting 'wasted'. If you do visit night clubs, do not go off bragging how much money you have, this WILL make you an easy target for robbery. If they are trying to rob you, be smart, give them what they want. Acting tough, and resisting will lead to serious injuries or death.
In general, I have been to night clubs and out drinking as well with nothing happening, in fact, the people actually help you! Be polite to others and they will do the same for you.
