Delta Air Lines charges returning soldiers for checked bags
In sum, the group spent nearly $2800 in baggage fees for their gear, money that had to come straight out of their pockets.
Obviously a policy is in place between the airline and the armed services that permits soldiers returning from war to bring back all of their gear without cost. What's likely is that an uninformed agent at the connecting airport didn't know about the rule and charged the group. Either way, Delta should fix the error and refund the fees.
UPDATE: Delta's policy states that for military members, THREE checked bags are allowed in coach and FOUR checked bags are allowed in first, so the baggage fees may actually be correct. Whether Delta's policy is palatable or not is another question, but it appears that the agents were charging the servicemen properly.
UPDATE 2, 11:34PM EST, 6/7: Delta just posted a blog article discussing today's situation in which they discuss their policy. Specifically they state:
You can read Delta's full post here.In the case of today's situation, we would like to publicly apologize to those service men and women for any miscommunication regarding our current policies as well as any inconvenience we may have caused. We are currently looking further into the situation, and will be reaching out to each of them personally to address their concerns and work to correct any issues they have faced.
UPDATE 3, 12:47pm EST, 6/8: Delta has updated their baggage policy:
ATLANTA, June 8, 2011 – Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) today increased its free checked baggage allotment for U.S. Military traveling on orders in Economy Class to four checked bags.
Delta's revised baggage policy also allows U.S.military personnel travelingon orders in First and Business Class to check up to five bags at no charge. This change also adds dependents traveling with active military on orders. Each bag may weigh up to 70 lbs. (32 kg) and measure up to 80 linear inches (203 cm), which offers added flexibility over the standard 50 lbs. and 62 linear inches (157 cm) allotment. Because of weight, balance and space constraints, Delta Connection carriers will accept up to four bags at no charge.
For personal travel, active military presenting military identification may now check up to two bags weighing 50 pounds (23 kg) or less and measuring 62 inches (158 linear cm) or less in combined length, width and height without charge.
Previously, Delta's policy allotted three free checked bags in Economy Class and four in First and Business Class for military members traveling on orders.
Details of Delta's baggage policy are available on delta.com.

Who would dream of charging ret. servicemen/women a bagage fee..ans.DELTA. Last week my daughter made a confirmed reservation for her small dog a. She was told the fee was $100. to fly with her..when she got to the airport, with the dog, the agent told her it was $150.00..and this was after the reservation was confirmed.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGEOUS, STUPID, AND UNAMERICAN TO CHARGE OUR SOLDIERS FOR ANYTHING!!!! THEY SHOULD ALL TRAVEL "FIRST CLASS"!!! WHAT AN UNGRATEFUL NATION WE ARE!!! DOESN'T MATTER WHO'S AT FAULT AT THE AIRLINES, WHO'S POLICY IT IS, FIX IT!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS "BUSINESSMEN"? FIX IT, NOW!!!!

This just shows the lengths greedy airlines will go to exploit their passengers.
I would walk before I ever fly Delta again.

Delta should allow them to bring home as much gear as they have with them period--I don't care if they need a second plane to fly it home--these fine men and women are risking their lives for everyone and its very simple--they deserve the BEST of everything and on their flight home that include FREE bags! This is one of the worst ways yet Airlines have to try to make a buck!

I agree. Tthey should be able tocome home free and give them complete respect. They have given us so much.

I certainly don't think that the soldiers should have to pay to bring home their gear but I don't blame Delta for charging them. The government negotiated a contract that allows for three bags at up to 70lbs each. That is much more than the average passenger gets to bring for free. If that isn't enough then the government should negotiate a higher limit or reimburse the soldier for the extra cost. Delta is a private for profit company and actually profits have been pretty slim for a while for all of the airlines. Everyone wants Delta to cover the cost but I bet very few of the complainers on here would pay an extra $5 for their ticket to cover the costs for Delta in this situation. Go ahead, I'm sure I will get slammed for this but it is the truth. The soldiers shouldn't pay but we (through our government) should.

I agree with all the people that are never flying Delta again. I used to think it was a great airline but this? No more. That is a disgrace. What does Delta have to "look into" anyway? It's another airline for me even if Delta has the lowest fee at the time.

I don't know how is possible that the people who are giving their life to protect our country (us) can be in such way. we have to respect them. Have some one though How many american soldiers have die for our freedom? we have to be thankfuly persons.

According to Delta's website, "Delta Air Lines Waives All Excess Bag Fees for Military Personnel." http://news.delta.com/index.php?s=43&item=238 Guess they changed their mind?
Maria Jun 8th 2011 1:51AM
You are absolutly right! It is the least thing they can do for our soldiers who are overseas!! The NERVE of limiting bags for them!! Making them pay $200 each... they paid enough.. some of them paid their lives!!! Shame on you DELTA.. I will boycott your airline. I will NEVER fly a Delta flight again!! I think ALL Americans should do the same.

I tried to go to the site listed below and file my complaint, but you must have a date and flight number before they will accept it. No go.

I think the military should take charge and ship their weapons for them - sign them off when they begin their trip back and get them back at their destination - This way, we don't have arms on the flight - that could fall into the wrong hands - and the GIs can travel lightly without the added stress of baggage and/or fees - This way, carrying up to 3 bags for free wouldn't be a problem. Why would a GI have to carry a grenade launcher on an aircraft? Or his weapon. I also think in this case - that Delta should refund their money - since most GI's fly standby - those who end up in first class shouldn't be given preferential treatment - If they can afford a first class ticket - then they can afford to pay for the extra bag - but if they fly standby and are fortunate enough to end up in first class... get my drift?

Thank you for posting the site for Delta Airline complaint dept.
I am sure once an email goes out to share this story with everyone in their address book, Delta will be out of business if they do not refund this group and any other U.S. Military they have charged bagage fees to.

Our men and women who are risking their lives so that we as
Americans ( including DELTA AIRLINES ) can maintain our
way of life DO NOT DESERVE such treatment upon coming
home. I hope that Delta Airlines feels REAL repercussions
from this episode now and into the future.....
