Does your passport photo still look like you?

My boyfriend got his current passport on his 17th birthday. Now on the verge of his 27th year, the picture inside barely resembles him. He changed and grew as stamps were added, but his passport photo remained the same. His shaggy, teenage hair has morphed into a more clean cut look, and these days his face is looking a little less tan and a little more grown up. But somehow, customs agents are able to look underneath his current five o'clock shadow to recognize he is still the same person he was nearly ten years ago.
Do you still look like the "former you" in your passport? Do you ever get nervous in security lines wondering if the agent will question whether or not your documents are the real deal? A joint photo project called Passport and Reality by Suren Manvelyan and Biayna Mahari that was brought to our attention by Flavorwire is collecting passport photos and comparing them to current looks. Some of the photos are simply bad mug shots, while others show just how much people change over the years. Click through the gallery below to see what I mean: passport photos are on the left, while present-day portraits are on the right.

A perfect reason to have passports updated every 5 years and not every 10.

It's an expensive and time-consuming process. The agents are trained to see similiarities. Why would you put people through that mess more than necessary?

I totally agree

Most of them you could see somewhat of a difference,

Wow, they all look like they should be deported!

For one thing, you're not supposed to smile in your passport photo, so these 'after' pictures aren't a true reflection of what a currente passport photo would look like. And indeed, they all are dark/ethnic looking people. Odd.
I look exactly the same now as I did in my passport photo 10 years ago. But then, it appears many of these have gained weight thus their faces are far larger for the same features.

How can someone be "ethnic looking"? Caucasian is an ethnicity as well....
Hilarious reading this, how many people see "brown" and make the racist comment that they all look the same.
I am caucasian, BTW, but I can see several different ethnicities represented here.
Also, why wouldn't they be mostly non-caucasian, we are a minority, just not in some parts of Europe and the US.

Where in the heck did you get the idea that one is not supposed to smile for a passport photo? That's the silliest thing I've ever heard and I've had a passport for over 30 years. I've had the people at the passport office take several photos for me so that I could pick out the most flattering one and they even said "smile" while taking the photo.

This makes me wonder how many people have come into the U.S. using someone else's passport. Pretty scary that they would accept a passport with a photo that looks so different. How can they be sure who they're letting in?

At first glance, most of the second photos look much different. But when you look at individual features such as noses and eyes, you can tell it is the same person.

lol... I think I've seen all of the mens' "before" photos on PlentyOfFish.com in the 55-60 yr. old range!! :-)

The fact that these passports are still working for these people is reason for concern. I am all for fingerprints PLUS pictures updated every five years. Even coporate keycards are using fingerprints and "eyeprints" so surely, where national security is involved, we could, too.
sally Jun 7th 2011 11:31PM
The last guys are not the same person.
What happened to the noses of some of these people?!
glena Jun 7th 2011 4:17PM
This is what happens when people don't take care of themselves throughout their lives !! No reason to gain more than 20 lbs more after high school.
Gluttony and Sloth....

Everybody is different. I graduated HS at 135, it's true that I need to lose some weight but I would have to lose significant muscle mass to get down to 155, and I would be at zero body fat.

Aren't these photos from the 7-11 twenty five yr reunion party?
