This has to be one of the most ignorant, ill/mis informed articles I have had the pity to read for a long time. An American spends six days in a "country" whose history/ culture / language /politics he knows nothing about and proclaims from his perspective what be believes is a rightful response to colonization and oppression. Just because there isn't military oppression doesn't mean a people don't feel oppressed or don't want to be ruled by a central government hundreds of Km away whose values, culture and language are ever different to their own . Look at your own war of independence and lack of representation that caused it, look at Scotland and the recent elections there. Look at Belgium or the indigenous people of Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the United States.
Ask the people of Scotland about the legacy of Thatcher or the people of East Timor about Suharto, the people of norther n Iraq about Saddam, the people of south-eastern Turkey about Istanbul .. and you might learn something about legacy. Given that in the last few weeks, the recently formed coalition Bildu beat Spain's two largest parties PP and PSOE, which tried to ban it, coming second only to the Basque Nationalist Party PNV in the region, highlight the legitimate Basque's peoples aspirations.
