I started scuba diving 6 years ago and love it. Your advice for the new diver was very good, except the part about a camera. SKIP THE CAMERA for your first few years of diving. Scuba diving requires your full attention to your equipment and environment. A camera is an unsafe accessory until you are completely comfortable in the water. For my first few annual trips to Saba, the dive center wouldn't even rent me a camera.
There will be plenty of other experienced divers on your trip that will be more than happy to copy their pictures to your camera chip.
