Hi Rachel,
That's not a silly question at all! :) When climbers attempt to go to the summit of these big mountains, like Everest, there is no guarantee that they will make it at all, which is why mountaineers will call it a "Summit Attempt." The term "Summit Bid" is just another way of saying the same thing. They're making a "bid," if you will, that they'll be able to go to the top, and get back down safely. Some times those attempts (or bids) fail due to bad weather, poor planning, health, etc.
