16-year old looks to become youngest to North Pole
16-year old Parker Liautaud has set some rather large goals for himself. While many young men and women his age are concerned with getting good grades and who they'll be taking to the dance on Saturday night, Parker is busy planning and training for an expedition to the North Pole. His second such expedition in fact.Liautaud is hoping to become the youngest person to travel to the Pole on foot, and in two weeks time he'll set out for the arctic to do just that. He and his guide, polar veteran Doug Stoup, will make a "Last Degree" journey from 89º North to the top of the world on skis. In the process, he hopes to raise awareness about the growing impact of global climate change on our environment, while also inspiring other young people to go out and do great things as well.
Parker attempted this same journey last year, but came up just short of his goal thanks to a combination of extremely bad weather, negative drift of the ice, and large sections of open water. Despite their best efforts, Parker and Stoup came up 15 miles shy of the finish line, and had to be airlifted to the North Pole via helicopter to catch their plane ride home. This year they hope to finish what they started in 2010.
While on the journey north, Parker and Stoup will be taking measurements of the amount of snow on the arctic ice. That data will be shared with the University of Alberta upon their return with hopes that it will offer insights into the short and long term impact of climate change on the region.
When he sets out in two weeks you'll be able to follow Parker's progress via his website, Facebook page, and Twitter feed. It should be quite an expedition for the young man.

Parker Liautaud seems to have forgotten that a handful of 15 year olds have completed a last degree on foot - e.g. Jordan Maguire (2006)
Double amputee Jan Mela (aged 15) walked (almost) a last degree in 2004 when he walked 70kms to the North Pole.
With no one body regulating expedition claims North of the Arctic circle it's easy to be fed false claims.

Maybe someone other than Michel Moore should remind the poor boy that the world has been cooling for the last 11 years.

Good Luck on your journey. This is a great adventure, keep the spirit alive as you have many more years ahead of you and many more adventures in your life to accomplish. You will look back on this someday and be glad you did it and not "I should have"

Somebody had better give this kid an up-to-date atlas with a map of the northern latitudes of good ole planet E.
There is no land mass at the north pole. This kid is planning to ice-floe hop? Or swim?

That first paragraph by Kraig Becker wins my personal prize for the most cliche-ridden use of the English language that I've read this week.

Hopefully the youngster won't get himself killed trying to save a planet that ISN'T in peril.
The trip should be a great adventure. Too bad it's paired with the failed CAGW zealotry.
Oh, and Parker, don't try to hug a Polar Bear. They're doing fine, but they'll still eat you if they get the chance.

I have to wonder about the thinking of parents that would allow their kids to do such dangerous and stupid things . Seems to me like they could use a session with Doctor Phil.

Yea, it''s better to be a couch potato, sit on you butt and play video games, do drugs, eat and get fat. The heck with a journey of a life time. Oh and Al says "take your golloshes" it's melting up at the pole, and tell Santa we all said hey.

I Congratulate you on your motivation Parker and wish you nothing but the best. Please don;t fall for the Lie that global warming is caused by anything but natural cycles of nature though, humans have nothing to do with it. Don;t be fooled!
