It is articles such as this that lead to a lot of unhappiness within the CouchSurfing community.
If you are stuck, and BROKE, we are not your social services. Go to a homeless shelter or somesuch. If that isn't appealing, then you cannot afford to go the the festival. Plain and simple.
CouchSurfing is a community and as its members are part of the community, we do each other a favor by not charging to have them as guests. Much as you would do with your family or friends.
Want the equivalent of a free hostel? Check out anything but CouchSurfing.
Interested in joining a community where you are expected to provide your talents as a hometown guide in the rare event that you have circumstances where you cannot take a community member into your home? Then by all means, welcome. We are a wonderful, welcoming, warm community who will greet the informed newcomer with open arms. READ EVERYTHING, INCLUDING THE TIPS to become that informed newcomer and beloved community member.
In this case, without cost is not the same as free. Guests "pay", just not with money.
