It is articles such as this that lead to a lot of unhappiness within the CouchSurfing community.

If you are stuck, and BROKE, we are not your social services. Go to a homeless shelter or somesuch. If that isn't appealing, then you cannot afford to go the the festival. Plain and simple.

CouchSurfing is a community and as its members are part of the community, we do each other a favor by not charging to have them as guests. Much as you would do with your family or friends.

Then by all means, welcome. We are a wonderful, welcoming, warm community who will greet the informed newcomer with open arms. In this case, without cost is not the same as free. Guests "pay", just not with money.
