Spring Breakers head to Mexico despite drug wars
While drug war violence has sent Mexican PR into a whirlwind, spring breakers have been unswayed by the persistent safety warnings and bad press. According to the AP, spring break reservations to Mexico remain resilient in the face of such setbacks, even growing slightly over last year. The big three of the Yucatan peninsula - Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and the Riviera Maya, are the top destinations according to reports.
The students, party-monsters, and brus hit these resort communities for good reason and with high confidence. With patrolling guards and a resort safety buffer, a city like Cancun is likely safer than St. Louis. While the resort areas in Mexico are generally quite tame, Acapulco is a recent example of how bad things can get. Acapulco, the original Mexican beach destination on the Pacific Coast, saw a string of gruesome gang violence earlier this year in the form of 14 beheadings. There is no priceline deal to Acapulco that can fill the void left by that kind of press. Predictably, travel to this region has lapsed dramatically.
The beautiful beaches, low prices, and an 18 year old drinking age form an alliance of desirability that many students adore. This spring break, grenade horns will sound and tank draped bros will mockingly shout "Cabs a'here" at every feasible opportunity, but there will almost certainly be no gang violence in tourist areas. As with all travel, as long as vacationers exercise caution and stay in the resort comfort zone, all will be fine. In fact, I will be visiting the Mayan Riviera in June, and my only concern is whether I will have time to go swimming with Whale Sharks.

Kind of a cheap shot at St. Louis don't you think? It probably doesn't matter to you but chew on this -- the St. Louis Combined Metropolitan Area (CMSA) is the 15th largest in the country with nearly 3 million people. YET the Crime Ranking for the St. Louis CMSA ranks a lowly 103rd -- far below what you would expect given its overall size! Not exactly the kind of dangerous place you are trying to paint! Downtown St. Louis is only 66 square miles; St. Louis County is 524 square miles; and the Combined CMSA is over 8700 square miles. Painting a wonderful metro area with your negative brush is not fair to the overwhelming majority of people who live outside the 66 square miles of Downtown. Ever thought about being fair and checking your facts first?

I was just trying to reiterate the safety of Cancun by comparing it to a large U.S. city. I chose St. Louis because a recent FBI study declared it the most dangerous city in the United States, at 5 times the national safety average. I am sure it is a safe city, and I apologize for any offense I may have caused. Below is a reference article for getting the safety numbers.

Justin, please read my comment again. Note the unfairness of painting an entire county and region called "St. Louis" with this negative stuff when it only applies to an 8 square block area of a 66 square mile area of a county of 524 square miles and a region of 8700 square miles. If you have an email address I can send you some information. If you prefer, please go to this website and click on all the links at the top of the page. You will get my drift.

I was just citing the recent study to prove that I was not pulling the numbers out of the ether. As far as fact checking is concerned, I wanted to show I was citing an actual study. I am open to the notion that the study was unfair and paints St. Louis in an unfavorable light, but my point in the article was to show that Cancun is as safe as an average American city, which I believe St. Louis to be.
I think St. Louis is a great place. When I was researching MBA schools, I considered Olin in St. Louis because I genuinely like the city. I like the atmosphere and the sporting teams, and in general, feel that the region is a particularly pleasant stretch of our country.
I read your article on the website that you linked to me, and I enjoyed it. St. Louis is lucky to have a wonderful citizen such as yourself. Your cause is a noble one, and i wish you the best with it.

Thanks, Justin. It has become my life's work at age 65 for St. Louis to get the positive national and international recongnition it so richly deserves. I love this town and can say that with credibility as my work has taken me to 45 countries and 6 continents! Check my wife and I out at
