Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail: The Food

On a long-distance hike like the Pacific Crest Trail, food is the all-important fuel that keeps the hiker going, mile after mile.
A long-distance hiker can burn more than 6,000 calories in a day, and that means a lot of food. Hikers strive to keep their trail-diet nutritious, delicious, and lightweight. On our journey, Katie and I learned some important lessons about the right way to cook and eat on a long-distance hike. This video takes us from grocery shopping (in bulk!), to the test kitchen, to the trail.

Guys -- great posts; I'm looking forward to more trail tips from you. Did you ever get discouraged while on the trail and just wonder "what were we thinking?" and, what do you two do when not hiking the high mountains?

Hi Bill,
Thanks for watching! Katie and I both stayed really positive throughout the hike and were determined to finish the entire length of the trail. That being said, there were definitely many tough mornings when it was hard to get out of our cozy sleeping bags - especially when the weather got bad (stay tuned to the videos to find out more details about hiking in rainy and snowy conditions). Some days you don't really feel like walking 20-30 miles - but you don't much of a choice once you're out there. At the end of the day, its always a rewarding feeling! Life on the trail moves at a much different pace then everyday living and many hikers will tell you that it's really an addictive habit!
Katie and I are planning future long distance hikes and both working freelance media jobs in NYC. I do video work and she is a writer and pr consultant.
Thanks for your interest and keep on watching and of course happy trails!
Adam

I'm loving this series! I plan to do the PCT in a year or so. Not including stuff you bought on the trail, what did you spend for all that food before hand? I've got most of the gear already but food will be my biggest expense when the time comes.

Great video. I just want to know where you got the Crystal hot sauce packets.

For hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail who are passing through the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California, check out the Baldwin Lake Farmer's Market & Community Gardens located a few miles east of Big Bear City and just a few hundred yards of the Pacific Crest Trail in the community of Baldwin Lake.
You can check the market and gardens and yearly schedules out at http://baldwinlakenews.com
Stop by on your way through the mountains and say hello!
