New Wooden Warrior roller coaster will provide family fun at Quassy Amusement Park
Along with Six Flags New England and Canobie Lake Park, another New England amusement park will be debuting a new roller coaster in 2011. Middleburry, Connecticut's Quassy Amusement Park will be replacing their aging steel roller coaster, Mad Mouse, with a family wooden coaster dubbed Wooden Warrior. The new ride's name was chosen via a name contest that the park held with local schools.Wooden Warrior was designed by world-class designers The Gravity Group. They're responsible for The Voyage at Holiday World; a coaster thought to be the best wooden coaster in the World. Unlike Gravity Group's previous designs, Wooden Warrior will be one of the company's first smaller, family-sized designs. The ride will feature a rather short 35' tall lift hill that will produce a top speed of 35 mph. In comparison, The Voyage doubles those stats topping out at 67.5 mph with a 163' tall lift hill.
As you can see from the video above, Wooden Warrior doesn't aim to be a white knuckle thrill ride. Quassy's owners needed a coaster that was fun for all ages and from the video, it looks to be just that. Roller coasters don't require a lot of speed to produce those joyous little pops of airtime that make them so much fun. I'm a huge fan of The Gravity Group's other work and it looks like they may have another winner here, albeit in a pint-sized form.
Like many of my favorite roller coasters, Wooden Warrior will traverse Quassy's natural terrain. For example, the initial hill is 35' tall, but will drop riders a total of 45' as the track hugs the park's topography. The new wooden coaster is a huge update for the small park as they'll go from having a 44-year old run-of-the-mill ride to a sure crowd-pleaser that will provide a unique experience.

i cant believe the monster mouse ride will be no more!
i rode this coaster 35 years ago and it scared the living bejeezus out of me.i can remeber coming to the corners and being whipped around just as you thought you were going to go over the edge.
i returned 35 years later and after looking at how it was actually constructed it scared me even more as an adult, but it was one heck of a good ride, even though the entire structure would sway and shake with the movement of the cars!
this was my first coaster and i will miss it.

There's nothing quite like your first roller coaster, but both Six Flags New England (near Springfield, Mass.) and Playland Park (Rye, NY) have very similar roller coasters to Mad Mouse. You could visit those parks if you miss that experience.

The 2 mouses Playland's Zamperla mouse, and SFNE's Maurer Söhne are modern mouses. they reply only on hairpin turns and a few dips with no banks or unique features. The Allan Herschell built Mad mouse was unique in design fallowing a style closer to the Wood mouses found in Europe.
The moue operated at Playland before moving to Quassy in 81. the coaster replaced a B. A. Schiff built mouse.
stnmn35 you actually road 2 referent mouse coasters.

Hi Joel:
Thanks for the great writeup on the new "Wooden Warrior" roller coaster at Quassy Amusement Park. We're extremely excited that our small, family park will have a new marquee attraction for 2011 - one which fits our demographic.
The guys at The Gravity Group are a fantastic team to work with, and this coaster breaks new ground for them as well as they have created a class of ride for smaller operations.
We look forward to opening the ride and hosting the thousands of loyal customers who have supported us throughout the years!
Your friends at Quassy Amusement Park

Thanks for the comment. I'm looking forward to riding Wooden Warrior myself someday.
