I think the list of final candidates is silly, especially the mountain choices. How Vesuvius is more of a natural wonder than the tallest mountain on earth is beyond me. Frankly, I wouldn't place the Matterhorn or Kilimanjaro above Everest or Mauna Kea (highest from base to peak) either. Obviously cultural and historical significance of some of these sites has skewed the vote.
If the Maldives make the final 7, will we have to re-vote in 50 years when they're under water?
My list, not based on the candidates: Amazon River System, Nile River, Grand Canyon, Mt. Everest, Great Barrier Reef, Angel Falls... and I like your Galapagos choice. I'd also have to strongly consider Lake Baikal, the Mariana Trench and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
