Let me preface this with saying I have spent more than 15 trips toGuatemala and spent a number of summers in Antigua and around Atitlan. Make no mistake about it as referenced inthe travel advisory Guatemala has a high crime rate which has only gotten worse the last few years. I haven't been back in a little over a year since friends down ther recommended staying away as murders and kidnappings are on the rise. Also FYI taking a tour bus on those remote roads just makes you a greater target as twice when I returned people on my flight commented about being robbed on the main road to Ati. Once again Guatemala is a beautiful country currently racked with higher crime and gangs largely backed by the drug trade. VERYunfortunate por Los Chapines.
