The Turkish Life said...
Along the lines of "luxuriating in the things your expat home lacks," I think our favorite part about taking a day trip from VT to Arbanassi was being able to hike in the hills above town in total peace and quiet. It may have been the first time my friend's one-year-old son (born in Istanbul) had ever seen nature. The look on his little face when we gave him a flower to sniff was priceless.
Also, if you're looking for REALLY cheap digs in VT, keep an eye out for a middle-aged Bulgarian lady in combat books and a bathing suit (OK, I think she had some shorts on too) who hangs around the info board in the center of town looking for tourists to rent rooms in her house to. It's a little weird, sure, but friendly, cheap, and clean.
