Qatar Airways flight diverted after pilot dies onboard
We've heard of medical emergencies happening in-flight, but this brings "is there a doctor on board?" to a whole new level. USA Today is reporting that a Qatar Airways pilot died this morning on flight 645 from Manila to Doha, the Qatar Airways hub. The flight was diverted to Malaysia, where a new crew was secured. The flight arrived in Doha just over four hours after its scheduled arrival.
The pilot's speculated cause of death was a heart attack, but the airline has yet to confirm the cause of death or if the flight was ever at risk.
The last reported case of a pilot dying in flight happened on a Continental flight from Brussels to Newark in June of 2009.
What a terrifying ordeal. Our thoughts go out to the pilot's family.

Hmmm. Maybe a one pilot air crew is not such a good idea.

I was thinking the exact same thing. As a matter of fact, this scenario was the first thing that popped into my head when I first read that some clowns were actually considering this potentially catastrophic idea.

If it was a one-pilot flight, who the heck diverted the plane and landed it somewhere? I think you are probably mistaken. This is why I won't fly ... I want to be in control of my fate! For me, driving is best. Too bad there's no road to Europe (yet).

There are always 2 pilots on all passenger flights.Reason is flight safety in case one pilot dies. This planning of flights with one pilot by some airlines is impractical. This pilot i know was very fit.Heart attacks in age 40 to 50 range are most fatal.Higher age groups have better survival rate.

This actually isn't as uncommon as you'd think, it also happened on a Continental transatlantic flight last year. And no government in their right mind would ever approve a one-pilot crew.

BS. The American carriers would in a heart beat. Their greed was upsurp any logic to have two pilots. They only care about the almighty dollar and nothing else.

Terrible, sorry for the pilot and his family.....

This confirms that the suggestion that a flight attendant can sit in the co-pilot's seat is a ridiculous recommendation. The training a pilot goes through and what a flight attendant goes through are two separate and distinct skill development requirements. I hope that this confirms to leave pilots where they belong and flight attendants in the galley.

Brenda before you start making comments about flight attendants sitting in the pilots lap. You better know what your speaking about. Flight Attendants are only there for aircraft emergency and medical emergency. Not to serve food, not to make your flight more enjoyable. They have the training as a EMT. they know the aircarft that they are flying on in side out .To get people like yourself off in the event that their is some medical or aircraft emergency. I would like to see how long you would last just in the training of any US carrier. It is an FAA regulation for every 50 people on a US Carrier that their be no less than one F/A per 50 pax. The Airline it self can supper seed what the FAA demands. And you think they have time to go up to the flight deck and sit in a pilots lap. How highly misguided are you?

Patrice....read what Brenda said before going off at the mouth and looking ignorant. She said sitting in the co-pilots seat nothing about his lap. Yes this has been proposed for airplanes to fly with one pilot and if something were to happen to train the flight attendant to be able to help pilot.
Carlo Alcos Oct 13th 2010 4:58PM
Patrice..where did Brenda say a flight attendant would sit on the pilot's lap? She's referring to the comments made by RyanAir CEO to lose the co-pilot and in the event of an emergency a flight attendant could land the plane ("hell, these days the planes practically land themselves!"...right?). And for the record, supper seed = supersede.

To Patrice. Your comment had a spelling errror, it's "there" not "their". The word their is for ownnership. There is demonstrative also the opposite of here. They're is they are. In the event there is some medical emergency... not their as you stated.

I have flown as pilot 47 years starting at age 18.This pilot was fit I know him.
We need 2 pilots on passenger flghts. This flight had 2 pilots that is why this flight was saved.

Look at pilots FAA medical. Been in Aviation for many years. My father a pilot killed in 1966 lockheed electrica American Flyer. Owner of company paid off FAA doctor knowing he had heart problems this was a goverment charter in Ardmore ,Ok. Killed 99 American troops plus many pilots and flight attendants. After 40 years this is still going on,and being covered up by the FAA and companies.

Did he have the fish ?

Due to the problem of obesity in the states, it might be wise to consider having 3 persons on board that can man the plane
mannamedjoe Oct 13th 2010 3:18PM
And if you stay off the flight there should be no problem!
