I have over 200 letters from Vietnam filled with "longing," and "missing," and "my wonderful wife," along with a wedding ring I wore for 20 years inscribed with "forever," 3 books of journals I wrote just to make it through to the next day after he left for my best friend, and pictures of a life of a little family of three that could have made it, but for some twist of fate or failure, didn't. "The saddest words of sword or pen are but the words 'it might have been.'

Ouch! What pain in your letter. I send you healing kindness. They are not all bums, though it sounds as though yours turned out to be one. Hope in time you can look back on the better memories: cherish the third person in that family of three, and know that there is support out there.
