I just returned from 3 weeks in Australia, w/ 3 nights in St. Kilda and 3 nights right in Melbourne. (The rest on the Great Ocean Road, Port Fairy, the Grampions, Ballarat, Daylesford, and the Mornington Pensinsula.) Loved it! The food was fresh & fabulous, albeit sometimes surprizingly exensive. Shopping was also more expensive than I had anticipated. This was explained to me as "Aussies generally just don't complain aboout prices." - and that workers are paid living wages, which are reflected in the retail prices, and of course, importation costs. Still there are some good sales, if you look. The quality of the woolens is impressive. People were very friendly and helpful. I felt safe as a solo female traveller. The scene in town, especially at night, was lively, and the scenery in the countryside was stunning. Worth it! Finally, 3 tips: Wotif proved a very useful booking tool for lodging. The little cash-only sushi shops are a real bargain. Bring packing material and leave room in your suitcase to bring back wine!
