America's favorite park: Bear Head Lake State Park, MN
Over the past few months Coca-Cola has been encouraging Americans to vote for their favorite park through the "America is Your Park" campaign. With more than 5.7 million votes cast, the competition for the title of the country's top park was decidedly fierce, and with a $100,000 grant up for grabs, there was a lot of interest in the outcome. When the competition was over, and the votes were tabulated, the winner was Bear Head Lake State Park in Minnesota. Yep, that's right, America's favorite park isn't Yellowstone or Yosemite, but a little known state park that falls along the Boundary Waters near Ely, Minnesota. Bear Head Lake received more than 1.6 million votes, easily outpacing the rest of the competition, and earning the $100,000 prize. The Minnesota DNR says they intend to use those funds to build a new trail center for hikers and paddlers to enjoy before heading out on their adventures.
While Bear Head Lake may not be as famous as some other parks in the U.S., it does offer some great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. The park has 17 miles of hiking trails for summer use, and 9 miles of cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails for the winter. Paddlers can spend hours exploring the scenic shorelines by kayak or canoe, while wolves, moose, and black bear wander the beautiful Northwoods forests.
For more than 40 years Coca-Cola has been a major supporter of America's National Parks. In fact, they donated more than $500,000 to the National Parks Foundation this summer alone and $4 million over the past four years. The company has also helped to build and maintain more than 260 miles of trail while giving away annual passes and other prizes to entice more visitors to visit the parks. You can find out more about these efforts, as well as America's Favorite Park, at LivePositively.com.

They call this a contest to find the most popular National Park and a State Park Wins? Sounds fishy to me. I think someone did some ballot stuffing. I can't believe that many people have ever heard of this park.

Indeed very fishy. I was voting for The Great Smoky Mountains NATIONAL Park. It seemed like every time I voted (and I wrote down their and our vote tally) their vote would jump up by 20,000-50,000. It was brought to the attention of Coca-Cola and they saw nothing suspicious. I just never could understand WHY a state park was in the running. Smokys were #1 by a comfortable magin and then overnight it was down by nearly a 100,000 + votes and continued to lose ground every hour.

Somebody has it way wrong, the best National Park by far is Denali National Park. The Park road goes 90 miles into the park and is only improved enough for comfort and safety of bus passengers. There are no distractions in the park other than the Scenery and the Wildlife. Want to see some great pictures, go Facebook and see my photos, John Reece, of Denali 2010 #1 and #2. Then you'll change your mind. This is the most awe inspiring Park you'll ever see. If you haven't been there yet, make it a priority on your bucket list. I promise you , you won't be disappointed.

this state park has a huge following on facebook. it is where lilly the bear and her cub hope live. the birth of the cub was captured on webcam and the pair have been followed for months. that is why this park--all the followers on facebook worked together to make it happen. with that said, it is a great park too.

I don't know who participated in your survey but the most popular park is the Federal Triangle in D.C. That area is the most visited nation park in the world. It encludes the Smithsonian Institute, Lincoln and Jefferson memorials Viet Nam wall, WWII memorial, the Sylvan Amphitheater and Haynes Point. More people visit thst park on the 4th of July alone than visit other parks. The rest of the year it still gets millions of visitors.

From a State that voted for Ventura and Franken, is it any wonder they voted this place over two of the most majestic places on EARTH! I think not......... And a state park no doubt, jeez...

Gotta hand it to whomever organized and pulled off this fine example of ballot box stuffing. Obviously, the rules for submission of votes are lax and someone drove their 18 wheeler ( loaded with votes ) through the gap. However, if they played by whatever the rules ( at the time ) were; they get to win ( and even claim to be the favorite park in the USofA [ even if they got 10 times more votes than their total of all time visitors ] ). Anyone care to wager the rules will be tightened up for next year's vote ?

Lily and Hope's park-the bear researchers in this park do wonderful work!!!!
terry Sep 28th 2010 5:06AM
Nicole said it right: bear head lake state park was where a video cam was set up to "witness" the birth of a black bear cub named Hope. after that, Lilly (the mama bear) and lilly became separated for about a week. so, people not only were overjoyed when they were safely reunited, they all banded together with the facebook page and helped cast their votes.
I Laugh at people who think "more popular" is better. If that were the case, Detroit, MI would be considered america's favorite city to live.

Saaaay!!?? Did Acorn have anything to do with the voting process??
