Galley Gossip: IndiGo flight attendants forced to cut their hair - or wear a wig
Meet the flight attendants from IndiGo Airlines. They're young, chic, and might be wearing a wig. Well that is if they refuse to cut their hair. According to Anindita Ghose in the article A Curious Case of Stewardess Hair, the airline's new uniform includes a grey tunic with an indigo corsage and a hat to be worn with a uniform bob. The new look was launched on August 15th. IndiGo Airlines is a private domestic low cost carrier based in Gurgayon Haryana, India. It's main base is Delhi's Indira Gandhi's International Airport. In 2008 the airline won the title "Best Domestic Low Cost Carrier." I wonder if the airline is trying to reclaim that title by having their flight attendants sport what the airline reports is a more sophisticated and international look? According to the stylist for IndiGo airlines in an interesting article, long hair or hair buns do not go with IndiGo's new image, a look the airline believes makes their flight attendants appear younger and smarter and, in my opinion, quite French and very vavavavoom! But in a vintage way.
While it was initially mandatory for the flight attendants of IndiGo Airlines to wear the bob after the airline launched its new image, they now also have the option of wearing their own hair in a "French roll or tie bun." This after they put on what was reported as "a brave front in the face of severe scrutiny by curious passengers" known to love long hair. Thankfully things have changed. If it were me, I'd go with the French twist. It's just as sexy and a lot more practical.

If you're in a plane and it goes down, F/A's are going right into the body bags along with the passengers. Not many survive plane crashes. Yeah yeah, I know the Hudson story. They were the exception, not the norm.

"Bitter woman, walking down the street, bitter woman, one you'd not like to meet, bitter woman,
couldn't make it, in the air,
couldn't make it, face like a MARE....oooh, bitter woman!"

Are they also having to lighten their skin? These girls don't look Indian.....

Yeah! Right On, IndiGo Airlines! Yes! Yes! Yes! YOU are the boss, YOU write the paychecks, YOU make the uniform policy! The employees can cut their hair, get a wig or find somebody else to issue them paychecks! As for the slippery wigs? Spirit Gum Paste! Amen. And Amen!

As a F/A for a major US carrier, I long for the good old day's of the uniform police and WEIGHT CHECK.
Many F/A's today look like unmade beds.....king size beds.

In 1974 I flew L.A. to NYC for $250.00 round trip, adjusted for inflation (google "inflation calculator") that would be $1107.00 today. Orbitz has a price r/t of $278.00 (advance booking)right now. We are not paying for the level of service we had back in the good old days and to expect it is very naive. Airlines that try to give anything more than cheap basic service don't last long. With the wages that F/A's earn (and they do earn it) I'm surprised anyone would do it, give'em a break.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing everyone wants top service but doesn't want to pay for it ..and for all those complaining that the Flight attendants are not like they used to be well neither are the people flying on the planes as well ,people used to be well mannered and dressed a lot nicer when they flew ,they are now very rude and also dressed like they just got up as well ..

Thank you Greg! Why is it you seem to be the only person who realizes this?!!

You're welcome. Remember the old saying everyone wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.

Just one more thing that fortifies my resolution to never fly again. Flying has become pure torture and is much more agrivation than it is worth. I think we can ALL agree on that

I'm assuming that all male flight attendants have now been replaced with women so there is no need to mention what their hair has to look like.

I think they look cute .... very retro. I love the "Mad Men" early 60s styles that are making their way into fashion. Hard to believe there was actually a time when people took pride in their appearance.
Carolyn Sep 25th 2010 8:42PM
Yea, Jim, I challenge you on that as well. What a jerk, lol.

What beautiful girls! I can't imagine an American carrier having the "guts" to polish up their frumps -r-us cabin crews! Heck they can't even get them to smile anymore :-)
Kudos IndiGo

im so glad so many of you are judging the weight of people and how it makes them bad at their jobs, just out of curiosity how many of you are forced into buying 2 tickets for your giant as**s, maybe you shouldn't be on a plane at all since it will take too long to save you

To read so many comments in favor of old time "flight attendant" etiquette, grooming, uniforms, looks etc... brings indescribable joy, I thought I was the only one left missing those days. I am a flight attendant myself and I am fighting to bring those days back where we took tremendous pride in our job as a crew and it showed in the way we behaved and took care of ourselves. I still keep those standards and I am one of the few left who still follows high standards for the flight attendant community and the airline industry. I am so tempted to start a great movement to bring our airlines back to what they used to be. The fear of getting a lawsuit for discrimination has brought the airlines this low this is why thy hire whoever and whatever has a pulse. This has got to stop! Clean up the house!
