Check the alarm upon arrival - Hotel tip
I don't know if it's the maid setting the room's alarm clock as a prank, or the occupants prior to my stay. In any case, too many times I have been abruptly awakened to a blaring alarm or loud music booming at my head from the nightstand. Not the best way to start off a relaxing vacation.
Therefore, it's become my custom to check -- and turn off! -- the room-provided alarm clock when I first arrive so there will not be any surprises at dawn. Or worse: at pre-dawn.

Check the alarm? Better yet, how about if we just unplug it all together. We all have and travel with cell phones, so let that be your clock and alarm.

When we get home from a trip, I take all my luggage to our screened in back patio. Fearful of bringing home unwanted guests such as bed bugs, I unpack luggage outside and then take it into the back door/laundry room and put clothes in the clothes dryer on high heat setting. Then I launder all the clothes using hot water. Have never seen a bed bug in a hotel we stayed at but I am a germ freak and I am not taking any chances. Can't be too careful as even the "best" hotels can have bed bugs.

I always check the air filter on the A/C and usually, it is very dirty. Take it out, wash it and put it back on the A/C. After all, you're breathing the air coming from the A/C.

Check the alarm -- the smoke alarm. I always check to make sure the room smoke detector is working -- many times they are not working. Let staff know immediately!
