Pittsburgh restaurant features 'conflict cuisine'
Most American travelers will never set foot in Iran, but at least now if they make it to Pittsburgh, they can enjoy some of the country's delicious cuisine. It's the idea behind a new take-out restaurant called Conflict Kitchen, a new eatery that's attempting to feature cuisine from countries the United States is in conflict with.Conflict Kitchen might serve food, but it's hardly your normal carry-out joint. The project, which was started by artist Jon Rubin, will regularly shift themes to feature a different "conflict country" and promote cross-cultural understanding. The first four months are devoted to a collaboration with Pittsburgh's Iranian community. In addition to delicious food like the Kubideh Sandwich, Conflict Kitchen also plans to host events, performances and discussion surrounding this much discussed Middle Eastern country. Though there's been no announcement on the project's website, chances are good that other "rogue states" like North Korea, Venezuela and Afghanistan will get similar treatment.
The Conflict Kitchen project raises an interesting question. Who are we demonizing when we disagree with a country's politics? Is it the government of that country? Or is it also the people who live there, many of whom have nothing to do with the policies we dislike? Perhaps by traveling and through projects like Conflict Kitchen we can learn to better differentiate between the two.

"North Korea, Venezuela and Afghanistan will get similar treatment."
Yep...on the menu for NK: hot sidewalk pavers. For Afghanistan: choice selection of rocks from inside a cave. For Venezuela: red bandannas and T shirt with Hugo's face on them.

Ah, I believe you're one of the ignorant people this restaurant is talking about.

You are, in fact, SUCH A SIMPLETON ! Vote Republican you dorck!.......you certainly doen't know how to "think outside the box".

G4 talks about being a simpleton. Fascinating since they can't even spell DORK correctly.
Anywho, I think it would be nice to have a place serving Persian cuisine and yes it is technically Persian. Some of the stuff looks and sounds pretty good but I doubt it'll be coming to Michigan any time soon!

I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HAVE EATEN MANY INTERNATIONAL DISHES. NAMELY ETHOPIAN, BANGLADESH, PAKISTAN, INDIAN, ENGLAND, GERMANY, FRANCE, CHINA, JAPANESE, AND MANY MORE AND HAVING A TASTE FOR DIFFERENT FOOD, I HAVE THE EXPERIENCE WONDERFUL. OH YES FORGOT ITALY, NOT MY FAVORITE AND THEN MEXICAN, ONE OF MY FAVORITES NEXT TO PAKISTAN AND BANGLADESH. JUST BECAUSE WE ARE HAVING CONFLICT WITH A COUNTRY, DO NOT COUNT OUT THE GOOD THINGS. THE PEOPLE OF ALL COUNTRIES ARE JUST AS ANXIOUS TO GET AWAY FROM TROUBLE AND STRIFE AS WE ARE. AT LEAST THE COMMON PEOPLE

And if you don't like the food, they will stone you to death. What woman from the US would ever want to visit Iran. This (Iran) country treats woman like grap-so dont support them in any way.

Get a grip. The article is about a restaurant in Pittsburgh. Isn't part of living in a free country allowing anyone to open up any business they wish?
g4 Jul 10th 2010 7:14PM
It is the politicans, and religion, that treat women "that way". Not the ordinary Fellow-Human. Have you read about Iran's Health Care System. Of Course Not...............Vote Republican you Plubian

I never met a food I didn't like. The best way to get to know a people is through their food. On that basis, I love EVERYBODY! It's governments and the people that comprise them that do all the dirt around the world. Problems usually begin when someone wants to take more than their share of something that doesn't even belong to them. The rest of us should just sit around and share food, drink and recipes. Throw all government officials into the ring and let 'em fight it out. We, the people, will watch the dinner show while chowing down on each others' gourmet fare! Waiter, we're ready to order dessert.....!

Interesting that Americans would want anything to do with this treacherous country or anyone associated with it including the ones that came over here who dont believe in our laws or constitution and have made their own false God. I wouldnt give them a Penny only babies r innocent. If they r not for us they r against us foolish people they r infiltrating our neighborhoods, be careful who u lt in your life. Then again whoever is dumb enough to give their money for this crap might turn into suicide bombers!!!! and blow themselves up !!!

Why in the world would any TRUE American go to a restaurant that is flaunting the war tragedy in our faces? It is absurd, rude and appauling.

Makes the war more human - the people we are killing eat this food.
Angiebaby Jul 10th 2010 7:26PM
Let me preface my comments by saying I'm tired and cranky. But I've done a little research on the um, UNUSUAL foods in conflict countries, and I'm just gonna' come right out and say it. I don't want to catch something crawling off my plate so's I can eat it, I do not want a bowl of ANYTHING's penis soup and I don't care if you DO call it a delicacy and serve it ONLY to the most important guests... if doodoo passes through it, I am NOT fixing to chew on it. All that sh*t is just a little too Andrew Zimmern for me, and I'm not ashamed to say it.

Brilliant idea..."The more you know, the less you hate...the less you hate, the more you love...the more you love, the more you live." (That is me quoting me...but it surely fits!)
Americans primarily hate out of ignorance. Awareness is a wonderful thing!

I like your quote Lin; it is so very true.
