Is it the end of the line for Antarctic cruise ships?
Over the past decade, Antarctica has become an increasingly popular destination for adventure travelers with a penchant for visiting remote places that few others have the opportunity to see. To meet that demand, more and more ships have ventured into the frigid and treacherous waters along the Antarctic coasts, giving tourists a glimpse of the frozen continent, which had in the past seemed like a destination that was unapproachable for the average traveler. But those large cruise ships have raised concerns about potential threats to the fragile polar environment, and now there are measures being proposed that may prevent the vessels from venturing into those waters at all. The International Maritime Organization has issued a ban on the use and carriage of heavy fuel oils around Antarctica. Those fuels are the ones that pose the greatest threat to the environment should a spill occur, and they also happen to be the fuel that powers the larger ships in the region, which sometimes carry 500 passengers or more. The IMO ban is scheduled to go into effect next August, thus the upcoming season could be the final one for large cruise ships to sail those waters. The Antarctic season generally runs from November to February.
Several high profile cases in recent years have helped to spur this ban, including the sinking of the M/S Explorer , which hit an iceberg back in 2007, and two separate incidences of ships running aground last year. But intrepid travelers looking to visit the frozen continent shouldn't panic. There will still be options to visit the Antarctic, albeit on much smaller ships. The trip may get a bit more expensive (as if it wasn't already expensive enough!) however, with fewer options and operators to choose from.

Antarctica needs to be protected at any cost.
If we don't it will end up another gulf oil problem.
Clearly Obama is doing nothing to stop BPs oil leak. Obama has let America down. After the 2nd week of this leak he should of got the best minds together to find a way to control and stop it.
PB owns Washington and Obama and is taking its time to stop this problem.
I bet BP will NOT be able to stop it. Then what??

Tony , speaking as a conservative this may surprise some people who think all conservatives are from the explore and exploit mindset. I think the antarctic should be protected, and you are right in saying Obama has let America and the Gulf down. First off he refused help from several other countries who offered oil skimmers and other means to retrieve the oil. Second, he didn't make use of several miles of oil booms that sit in a warehouse in Maine. Third, he has refused to take advantage of thousands of civillian volunteers to clean up the gulf coast. And most important of all is his playing politics and blaming previous administrations for this problem. This happened on his watch, not Bush's, not anyone else, but his watch. This was his EPA, this was his administration who issued the permits to BP and it was HIS PEOPLE who were supposed to be monitoring the drilling. The fact is this, deep water drilling always has a huge chance of something going wrong. More so than drilling in shallow water. Liberal environmentalist have forced lawmakers to close the areas closer to the coast in shallower waters, forcing oil companies to drill offshore in deep water. This has set the scene for a envirionmental disaster such as we now have in the gulf. Both BP and this administration share in the blame for this boondoggle.

INCIDENCES is SO not a word! Try incidents or instances, but holy cow, they let people like you WRITE? Every day I become more convinced that we in America live in a post-literate age, and yet we wonder why we're falling behind the other industrialized nations of the world. What a pity.

From your very own dictionary:
Main Entry: in·ci·dence
Pronunciation: \ˈin(t)-sə-dən(t)s, -ˌden(t)s\
INCIDENCE is a perfectly valid word. INCIDENCES, however, is NOT. The plural of incidence, as seen above, is INCIDENTS.

International Maritime Organization? What the hell is that? Legalized pirates on the high seas? (Actually, this smells like Green Peace if you ask me.) Anywho, so a few boats have run aground and another one sank. These types of accidents are going to happen regardless of the number or size of ships moving through the waters. It's part and parcel of maritime travel and or business. I don't think this group has the right to prevent the rest of the world from traveling to Antarctica via cruise ships. There has never been a major maritime disaster in those waters, like an oil spill, but if it happens... clean it up, like we're not doing! That is the key to maintaining safe, clean travel for people and the animals native to Antarctica! There is no reason for this "action" by these sea raiders. In case they haven't noticed, Antarctica is a FROZEN CONTINENT with more than ample room providing a safe environment for the polar bear population which is many things, fragile not being one of them. The International Maritime Organization should just bugger off and stop creating trouble where none exists.

Antarctica is the only continent that no nation has claimed to itself. There are about 25 nations that share the land. Too bad all other continents can't be as clean as Antarctica.

Dear BRENDA - As a matter of fact i do love trees. They are good for shade, especially the air and, to look up at the leaves blowing in the wind while laying on a hammock. Let's see, i have never heard of that program, so i guess CNN and Animal Planet are liers. It's ashame you don't want to protect things for future generations. I didn't know you spoke for the general population when you wrote "we" no longer believe them. Have a great day!
