Is it the end of the line for Antarctic cruise ships?
Over the past decade, Antarctica has become an increasingly popular destination for adventure travelers with a penchant for visiting remote places that few others have the opportunity to see. To meet that demand, more and more ships have ventured into the frigid and treacherous waters along the Antarctic coasts, giving tourists a glimpse of the frozen continent, which had in the past seemed like a destination that was unapproachable for the average traveler. But those large cruise ships have raised concerns about potential threats to the fragile polar environment, and now there are measures being proposed that may prevent the vessels from venturing into those waters at all. The International Maritime Organization has issued a ban on the use and carriage of heavy fuel oils around Antarctica. Those fuels are the ones that pose the greatest threat to the environment should a spill occur, and they also happen to be the fuel that powers the larger ships in the region, which sometimes carry 500 passengers or more. The IMO ban is scheduled to go into effect next August, thus the upcoming season could be the final one for large cruise ships to sail those waters. The Antarctic season generally runs from November to February.
Several high profile cases in recent years have helped to spur this ban, including the sinking of the M/S Explorer , which hit an iceberg back in 2007, and two separate incidences of ships running aground last year. But intrepid travelers looking to visit the frozen continent shouldn't panic. There will still be options to visit the Antarctic, albeit on much smaller ships. The trip may get a bit more expensive (as if it wasn't already expensive enough!) however, with fewer options and operators to choose from.

I believe you were looking for the word "penchant" instead of "pension" in the following phrase: "...travelers with a pension for visiting remote places."
Tom Jul 2nd 2010 2:38PM
Jeff:
To whom are you addressing your comment? The article I see uses the word "penchant".
Maybe, you should be more concerned about these writers ending sentences with prepositions, and their editors being too dumb to correct it.
("to choose from" ??????)
What ever happened to the proper English of "from which to choose"?

Hey Tom. Do you realize they could have corrected the mistake since the original post? This is the electronic age of instant fix......

I do not see any reason to visit the antarctic but have at it if its your thing.
If theres a market for it there will be a way to get there and cruise.
The cruise lines will flag a ship in a country who is not bound by any international
body that regulates shipping and do what they want anyway.
I do not think there are any waters claimed by any governments?

if folks wish to go somewhere remote for an adventure try st. helena; the island napoleon was exiled to. it has no airport and is supplied soley by the last royal mail ship in service. st. helena is arguably the most isolated place in the world. antartica is fairly easy to get to by comparison.

TEVA:
Many countries claim control over oceanic waters.
The US claims something like 20 miles from its coastline.
That is why party cruise ships make night sailings past that limit to host gambling outside of US territory.
Wasn't it Chilie that claimed a 200-mile limit and confiscated a US fishing vessel and abducted its crew several years ago?
North and South Korea have been fighting over control of an oceanic boundry for almost 50 years.
A South Korean destroyer was recently sunk over that boundary dispute.
I assume there are other instances around the world about which I am unaware.
From where do you get your international political information?
The National Enquirer?

What are they worried about maybe they may catch the Japanese whaleing ships illegially killing endangered whales and calling it research? Watch Whale Wars sometime and watch them butcher the whales they have killed in the name of research and throwing the parts they can't sell for food overboard. Some day soon we will have no whales left and no way to repopulate them. What will that do to the earth and what does that say about us as "human beings". What will those poor Japanese eat then? Oh yeah shark fin soup. They can catch the sharks and cut off the fins and throw the sharks back in the ocean.
I was sure there is a ban on commercial whaleing but I guess that does not apply to the Japanese ! If what they are doing is legal why do they have spy ships to keep the people who are trying to stop them and document what they do every year? What the Japanese are doing makes me sick. Why not get out and club a few baby seals to death so that some rich people can wear jackets and coats they do not need. It is a sad commentary on what we are leaving behind for the next generations. There is no reason for any country to hunt whales. We do not need them for food or anything else. Maybe 150 years ago but now it is just killing for killings sake. Shame on you Japan!!! You are not fooling anyone.

I liked what you had to say Joe.....at first...but what does Obama and Pelosi have anything to do with Antarctica? Let's keep our opinions to the subject at hand

The polar bears are starving. They need help and to be protected too. Just like BP, the big companies are poisoning the earth. WHALE WARS crew and Bob Barker were on Larry King Live last night. They said they wanted to go help the wildlife in the gulf but BP WOULD NOT LET THEM !!!!!!!! SINCE WHEN DOES BP OWN THE GULF AND THE GULF COAST ??????? Showed a clip from upcoming show. The Japenese purposely rammed the Ady Gil boat !!!!!!!!! Said PETA is planning on suing BP for i believe animal abuse. Jimmy Buffett the singer said on another show that BP HAS LIED FROM THE BEGINNING. THE WORLD IS A VAMPIRE !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brenda Jul 3rd 2010 11:26AM
Sheila.....you are obviously one of the tree hugging nut jobs......the polar bears are NOT starving, and the ice caps are NOT melting away.....you must have watched "inconvenient truth" a few too many times......keep spewing the lies you hear.......we no longer believe them, since the truth has come out.

People like Joe need to wise up. It's not saying you won't be able to go Antarctica. Just the large cruise ships will be banned, it even states you would still able to take smaller ships there. Why the ban? First of all the amount of fuel in these ships is staggering. If there were an incident involving a major fuel spill it would be devasting to the ecosystem. I have been to Antarctica to shoot a documentary on an anti whaling campaign. Every year the Japanese goverment sends a factory ship down there that processes the illegally harvested whales. If that ship were to sink, the damage would be irreperable. By the way that ship has caught fire twice already and nearly sunk both times. Maybe this ban would help to keep that ship out of the Antarctic sanctuary. So John if your argument is that you want to go there because of your right to travel, then why argue against a ruling that would help maintain a healthy ecosystem so everyone can enjoy it?
exoticdoc2 Jul 2nd 2010 4:15PM
How stupid. More interference from whacko environmentalists bent on either eliminating people from the planet or at least making sure they don't enjoy the world they've been given while they are here.

By the way, for those interested, if you sometimes post comments on Pop Eater (and their related popsugar) or Politics Daily, they will censor what you say, and not just for vulgarities. If the comment is not PC enough and disagrees with what they think, they will not post it. I found it ironic in that the place I tested this idea with popeater was on the article on Muslim censorship, via threats of violence (surprise, surprise), of South Park. So just be aware that Pop Eater is into censorship big time. Two of their favorite protectorates are Muslims and illegal aliens. Politics daily will also follow suit and censor an absolutely true, non-vulgar comment simply because they disagree with it and it is not PC enough. I have been repeatedly testing the popeater and Politics Daily comments section and they also censor any negative comments about themselves, such as this. Apparently they are ashamed of what they are doing and trying to hide it. In soome, popeater was censoring comments while allowing others to use profane vulgarities. How inconsistent. The latest confirmatory test was 7/2/10.

Cruise ships to, or near, Antarctica is a really dumb idea. There are more hazards to navigation than you can count and, sooner or later, a major catastrophe will most certainly occur.
jamesnpost Jul 2nd 2010 5:03PM
Don't worry, God will save you from the wicked witch Pelosi. After all, God always votes Republican, doesn't He?
jamesnpost Jul 2nd 2010 5:17PM
Nancy is not bad looking, for a skinny blonde California girl of her age, but that beast who is Governor of Arizona looks like one of those alien invaders in They Live. My Granny used to say you get the face you deserve at 50. Take a close look.
Richard Jul 2nd 2010 6:01PM
jamesnpost , if you got the face you deserve for that partisan and hateful remark about the Arizona Governor, you must look like your face caught on fire and was beat out with an ugly stick. Liberals are such a hate filled bunch, I thought you all stood for peace and love. Yeah right, thats like saying the economy is improving under Obamas policies. Never happened & never will.
rmrmsix Jul 2nd 2010 5:57PM
Does that mean that Japanese whaling fleet is prohibited from doing any actions in the area too?? Don't think that is going to happen!
