Merete Apr 28th 2010 7:01AM
Yes, Norway is right there in midst of it, but Norway is always forgotten...

I am appauled that once again the United States of America is mentioned in a derogatory way. I am very proud to be an American you idiot. The United States of America is always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. That is any person, any country. We are willing to help other countries even before taking care of some of our own Americans who are poverty stricken and yes we do have some Americans who are poverty stricken! And don't forget we are a country of the Melting Pot!!!!! What do you say of Finland hey? How many different cultures of people do you have living in Finland you idiot!!!!!! I bet one of your relatives or someone you know is living right now in the United States of America. And as far as the United States of America leaving your country Finland out of the headlines due to as quoted by you " that the US being an geoilliterate country look at yourself in the mirror who is truly the real one who is illterate!!!!!

Tuula -- I apologize for using the word idiot but I still feel deeply about my feelings of the United States of America but my intention was not to insult anyone so I aplogize for anything that I may have said that sounded insulting.

You still don't have the pronunciation correct. In the Icelandic language, the double L ["LL"] is pronounced as the "TTLE" in "settle, little, or skittle." Don't ask why, just accept it as a fact. "J's" are pronounced more or less like "Y" in the word "you." There are some other curious changes in pronunciation in the Icelandic language including that in certain instances the letter "F" is pronounced as a "P." And Icelandic has some extra letters, including one for "TH" as in thick and thin, and another for "TH" as in those and they.
When I lived in Iceland some forty plus years ago, I let it be known that I'd like to take a course to learn to speak the language. I was told by all of my Icelandic friends, "Don't bother, once you leave, you'll never use it again -- and all that will happen is that you will become extremely frustrated.
The word in question is pronounced more or less in this fashion -- EYA-FYAttla-yohkittle The last sylable is definitely not pronounced as I've heard so often recently like the English word "cuddle!" And definitely NOT with an accent on that syllable!
The Icelandic word for yes is "Ja.' " The accent over the"A" changes that letter's pronunciation from "ah" to "ow.' Thus, the word is pronounced "YOW." And to complicate matters, Icelandic is spoken both while exhaling and inhaling, the word for Yes is almost always sounded while inhaling!
I've always remembered that the Icelandic word for "good-bye," is pronounced "BLESS." Often the final two letters are changed almost to an "SH" sound.
Regardless of what you may think Iceland is a wonderful country with a very diverse population of about 250,000 consisting of Conservatives and Liberals and all manner of people in between. They have worked very hard to take a land that is both forbidding and and foreboding, and they have made something out of it, while remaining a VERY intelligent and industrious and mostly very friendly group of individuals!

You left out France in the countries impacted by the ash cloud...
And Carol, the only thing Tuula said is that the US does not always represent information about other countries accurately. Which is true. Look on any American news channel and the headline will reference to something happening in America. The US does focus on itself a lot. But I don't think you should get so worked up about Tuula's comment. It's time to recognize that the US isn't the best country in the world anymore. Thanks Atlante for recognizing this.
