Spirit Airlines to abolish reclining seats
Citing extra space and lower weight, the airline claims that this will help passengers save money by keeping prices low. But in reality, it's just another stunt to cram as many passengers as possible into the already crowded, fee-riddled aircraft. The Sun Sentinel has more details on the upcoming plan below.

I applaud Spirit Airlines!!!!! Thank you Spirit Airlines. I fly a LOT, and I mean a lot. I hate when the person in front of you sits down and boom, they put their seat all the way back and you have someone in your lap, very nice. Just what I wanted, a head of hair in my face, then they stretch and boom, you have a new lap child/adult. Good move Spirit. Now, charge for fat people that take up more than one seat. Make lap children sit on the lap of the person that wants to tolerate that annoyance, sit children in one area of the plane. Next....charge for snacks, I watched on a charter when people had to pay all of a sudden 66% don't want anything. Give it free and the snack bags and sodas are all over the place. People just can't wait two hours without eating? omg. I could go on but I like what Spirit is doing.
If people don't like it, feel like a cow and heard yourself onto a southwest plane. No seat assignments, what are those people thinking.
I'm very impressed with Spirit. No reclining seats, charging for those large carry ons and offering a discount on airline tickets, I'm ready to fly with you again.

If you really flew a lot (I fly 250,000 miles a year domestically), you would not be in the back of the plane worrying about whether someone reclined or not. You would be up in first class with the rest of us that truly fly a lot.

What? It is not lower ticket costs if they then turn around and charge for your bags. Who the hell flies without bags? Especially carry-ons? I love Southwest Airlines. Their so called "cattle call" boarding makes people show up ON TIME for their flights. All airlines board the plane by row numbers. All you have to do with Southwest is print your boarding pass online and show up for your damn flight on time if you want to get your choice of seat.
Southwest cares about their passengers. They treat their passengers like values customers, not like dollar signs. With the airlines where you can choose your seat online, who the hell says you are gonna get the seat you want anyway. You are left to choose from what is left at that time. With Southwest you are just doing that on the plane instead of on the computer.

REALLY? A head of hair in your lap? When any of the seats in front of me have been reclined, it doesn't go that far back. You can't even really see thr person in front of you unless you lean up and look! WHAT airlines have seats that actually recline that far!? Seriously people!

I hope the rest of the airlines get rid of reclining seats! Not everyone who flies a lot is sitting in first class. My husband flies every 2-3 weeks. He sits in the emergency row because he doesn't want to charge his clients for first class tickets. If he upgrades to first class, it's because of his flying status.

TO ED....Get a grip. I think the only you MIGHT be able to impress is your self and thats a MAYBE.. Sit back and enjoy the ride. My luck is when i fly i usually get stuck next to someone like YOU. The one that whines the entire trip.. Oh by the way ED. Do the letters E & D stand for Erectial Dysfunction? DUNCE

Work for Spirit, do you?
papam11 Apr 22nd 2010 2:44PM
Unless they're adding more seats, what are they gaining? I've never had a problem with reclining seat use. What's next, just a bunch of cattle pens? Who in heck is making these bonehead decisions?

ONCE I was booked on a Spirit flight out of Detroit, it turned out to be a test flight with NO ASSIGNED SEATS - so it was in effect a cattle car.. what a disaster. I LOVED SPIRIT 10 years ago when they still had prices and service!
I quit flying them in 2004 After one of their counter AGENTS in Detroit INFORMED ME THAT I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO CARRY MY FATHERS CASKET FLAG ON THE AIRCRAFT ON MY FLIGHT HOME FROM HIS FUNERAL. I NEEDED A TSA SUPERVISOR TO SET HER STRAIGHT! He wrapped the flag in plastic after patting it down and placed TSA secutity seals on it and told her I was cleared to proceed to security and cleared to board! I certainly hope it is not SPIRIT policy to treat service members or their families in such a deadful way!

The next thing they try will be apple crates, pay toilets and windowless plains. Hell why have flight attendents.

How often do you fly?
Joe Apr 23rd 2010 12:44AM
What about LAWN CHAIRS? Or, (shudder at the thought) webbing-style seats? After all, that's what Military Transports use? The 'Big Wigs' at Spirit better take thier heads out of thier backsides quickly or Spirit Airlines will become a GHOST for real! Fly JetBlue or AirTran instead! And, Southwest IS a good company to use!
Joe Apr 22nd 2010 2:52PM
I think this is great! I fly Spirit often, and their seats are very close together. There is often a passenger in front of me abusing the opportunity to recline a little bit and practically laying on my lap.
Ed Apr 22nd 2010 2:56PM
There is a frequent flyer!!!! I so agree with you
Alex Apr 22nd 2010 3:54PM
The way I see it, the seats were built to recline, that's what they were meant for, and therefore I have every right to take advantage of that nice little feature (I'm a bit of a sloucher, and I find the seat in the upright position a little uncomfortable). I also recognize that the person in front of me has every right to recline their seat. I never recline it under 10,000 ft. when it's not allowed, and I usually put it up during meal [pretzel] service. I'm also happy to only partially recline it if there happens to be a very large/tall person behind me.
However I can't stand these people who think they have this unalienable right to not have a reclined seat in front of them. I paid for a reclining seat, and I'm damn well going to use it!
Michael Apr 22nd 2010 4:14PM
Yeah! And on the same note, I just bought a pair of boxing gloves. I should be able to use them to punch whoever I want right in the face! I mean, the gloves were made for face-punching, ergo I'm totally in the right to punch whoever I want square in the nose whenever I want! Right??
Frank Apr 23rd 2010 12:12AM
Joe, "practically laying on your lap"? cmon, most of these airline seats only recline 3 or so inches.
The way it will be now is if one falls asleep they will topple forward out of their seat.
figsgrandpa Apr 22nd 2010 2:52PM
Hallelujah!!!
I'm the guy ususally sitting BEHIND the woman who doesn't feel comfortable unless her seat is reclined. I only recline my seat if the plane is empty and there's no one behind me. I will gladly give up these ocassional "reclines" for the certainty that I won't have to fly with my knees pinned and the back of a headrest in my face.
MO Apr 22nd 2010 7:56PM
Once an idiot always an idiot. My best suggestion for you is find an airlines that let's you stand and fly. You have no regard for anybody's comfort. I have flown many many times, a reclined seat ahead of me has never caused any problems. Now go crawl back in your recliner at home, or do you have one?
E Apr 22nd 2010 10:55PM
If you dont want to fly with your knees pinned to the seat in front of you then I suggest you do NOT fly Spirit. I am 6'2 and I have flown them only once. I was in an exit row and I could still barely fit my legs in front of me. I do not care how cheap their flights are, I refuse to fly with this airline ever again.
