Is the U.S. Forest Service spying on visitors?
Our country's national parks and forests are intended as sanctuaries, zones of peace and quiet where visitors can get away from the give and take of modern life. But don't expect to have it all to yourself: these days you might be joined by hidden cameras, placed by the U.S. Forest Service. Don't break out the tinfoil hat just yet; this "conspiracy theory" may have some truth to it. According to a South Carolina newspaper, the agency has been placing hidden cameras in forest areas for some time.Visitor Herman Jacob was camping and looking for firewood in South Carolina's Francis Marion National Forest last month when he stumbled across a wire. The wire took him to a video camera and a remote antenna sitting in the middle of the woods. Perplexed, Jacob took the camera home with him and contacted the local police, who explained it had been set up to monitor "illicit activities" and demanded its return. Further investigation by the Island Packet, the newspaper that researched the story, confirmed that the Forest Service has used the cameras as a tool of law enforcement for "numerous years." A Forest Service spokesperson quoted in the article indicated that images taken of those not targeted by an investigation are not kept.
In light of the fact drug cartels have been growing marijuana on federal land for some time, this type of surveillance makes more sense. And, legally, the cameras are on public land - surveillance is permissible. But is a policy that allows this type of monitoring, particularly in a quiet forest, a violation of our trust? Or is it a necessary evil, preventing misuse of public land? Leave us your thoughts in the comments.

Absolutely an inexcusable violation of our rights. I fully support the prosecution of marijuana growers, but my liberties shouldn't be taken away so that the government can spy on 'illicit activities.' After all, you can grow marijuana anywhere, should the government set up cameras everywhere to monitor 'illicit activities'? Hell no!

The bottom line here folks, in MY opinion, is that if WE the people continue to let OUR government take away OUR constitutional rights then we truly have nothing to complain about. If WE the people do not like the way OUR government is run then WE need to change it.
Never underestimate the power of the PEOPLE of this great country of OURS.
Please everyone remember…. United we stand……
Keep pushing back!

They should monitor the flights going to the Turks and Caicos Islands where our IRS agents are prohibited from snooping into U.S. citizens' bank accounts. The monitors could easily see some of our wonderful Washington politicians traveling to the Turks where they keep all their kickback money. But our govt says, "Hey, let them keep that money because they keep giving us raises in salary."

If you aren't doing anything illegal, I guess you have nothing to worry about.

How does it "prevent misuse of public land" if they have been kept secret? They could catch perps, perhaps, but they can prevent NOTHING. and therefore are an unecessary intrusion.

The nuckle-headed conservative Supreme Court has ok'd guns being carried in public parks while the U.S. Park System has eliminated rangers carrying weapons in the same. Cameras are all they have today to withstand drug growers, white supremacist militias, and urban gang- bangers on a holiday.

park rangers are perverts that can't get a real job

You'd be surprised at the misuse of our lands in trust. Vandalism, theft of plants, meth labs, marijuana beds, and murder. Christmas we monitored by air a pair of entrepreneurs cutting CEDAR trees to sell for the holidays. When apprehended they had 47 stacked on their trailer. At the other extreme I observed a senior collecting a very large bouquet of daffodils for his wife. Although not native they do mark old boundaries and dwelling sites. He was given a warning and I was given a great bundle of flowers to brighten up the visitor center. Human nature demands discerning vigilance.

Keep the cameras on full tilt. People are destroying the parks, illegal dumping,
killing animals that they should not be killing; stupid and careless camping habits,
starting fires and many other kinds of illegal activities when they think they can get away with it...keep the cameras and even add lights when it is feasible, we
need to make people accountable and responsible for what they are doing.

Mikey, Whats with the name calling? With such a baby name like your screen name, you should be calling someone else "idiot', 'moron'? Think about it next time you feel like making an a@@ out of yourself!

Druggies growing and guarding their stash on public property are a much bigger threat to my family's peace and safety than someone in law enforcement looking at a video cam.

I guess now they can verify if a bear does infact crap in the woods

OK I dont want cameras in our forest. I do feel it is against our rights. As a US vet from the army it does go against my grain. But in all of these post not one time have I seen any one say anything about them helping to find lost kids. Say it was your child that went to pee and got lost and that camera was able to place that child in a certin place at a certin time this could mean the diffrance between life and death.
On the other hand there is a fine line between your rights and your life.If indeed they are catching drug growers with this then it is a good thing. But I want to add here is when we buy pot from another country we are helping the cartels and we are making it possable for them to buy guns to out gun our law men.I seen in one other post that making it leagle and taxing it.Well that for one is a smart thing to do but as we all know someone will be growing without paying and there is another law broke to send you to a over crowed jail.
I dont see what all the fuss is over a little pot.OK I would not like to see my kids smoking pot but then again I dont want to see a kid going to jail and becoming a hardend crimal for smoking some weed. With that said I will have to say that on this one guys Iam on the fence.BUT dont ever let me see you putting one in my window because the last thing they will record will be someones colan when I shove it up there a@#.And that will be worth sitting my butt in jail for you know what its called Three hots and a cot.

First of all, this is NOT legal just because it is on public land. The US federal government is NOT AUTHORIZED by our constitution to spend taxpayer dollars to place cameras for the purpose of surveillance of private citizens on public lands for any reason. Unacceptable behavior like this by "officials" is the reason why we are on the verge of a major uprising. It is not the economy, it is not racism, and it is not Obama; it is a government that is totally corrupt, arrogant and out of control. This may seem like "no big deal" , but when added to the virtually thousands of breeches of our constitutional law by government every day, it is one straw closer to breaking the camel's back.
