first time I hitch hiked I was fourteen. I didn't have very far to go, I had taken the train to a city about 45 minutes from my old hometown. My friends mom, having almost never been to said city, didn't know where the train station was but told me she would pick me up at a certain fast food restaurant that I thought I knew how to get to from the train station because I vaguely remembered it being near my old doctors office. I had seriously overestimated my memory and got completely lost, the cell phone my aunt had lent me for the trip had just died and it was the first time I had ever gone on such a long trip alone. I freaked out and just sat down on the sidewalk and started crying. A middle aged black man pulled up in a truck and asked me if I needed a ride, I said no but he could tell I was completely lost. I was going to walk away but then two of the most adorable little boys I have ever seen got out of the the truck and offered to put my bags in the back of the truck. Since I was completely desperate and their cute faces were so reassuring I decided to go with them. It was totally fine, they got me where I was supposed to be, which it turned out was several miles from the train station, bought me some food and waited until my friend showed up to make sure I was ok. After this I hitch hiked a few more times but I was always very discerning about who I rode with and I only did it if it was my only option and usually I did it with a friend, but a few months before I turned 17 I was late for a meeting with a landlord of a house my friends and I were trying to rent. I just missed the trolley and a man who had seen me running after it pulled up and asked if I needed a ride, I really didn't want to be late so I got in the car. Since I had never been to the neighborhood I was trying to go to before I had no idea that he was taking me in the completely wrong direction. After a minute or two he starts talking to me about how he has so much money and shows me a couple wads of cash. Then he makes an off hand comment about how he heard white girls give really good head and before I know it he's asking me "how much?" I told him I wasn't for sale. Then I noticed that where we were the houses were very well kept and spaced far apart. I knew the neighborhood I wanted to be in was kind of ghetto and mostly row homes so I started getting scared. I asked him where we were and he starts saying come on $20, no? $50...girrrrrlllll, you expensive..... he started taking off his pants and I smacked him in the face and screamed at him to take me where I was supposed to be. Looking back that was a really stupid thing to do but it must have scared him because he shut up and drove me to a few blocks from where I was supposed to be and let me out. I haven't hitch-hiked since. Last time I missed the last bus I slept in the bus terminal.
