I have never 'hitched', but knew lots of friends who did. Sometimes just around town sometimes out of town to get to the "good drugs" or go see their girlfriends/boyfriends then hitch back home.
Thank you Smitty for saying back then truckers were Americas heroes. My husband is a trucker he has driven for 34 years. He tells me stories of how truckers would stop and pick up hitch-hikers and take miles down the road. The conversations and companionship was all that was needed. Truckers used to stop and help motorists change flat tires, put water in an overheated radiator. Wait with them till a highway patolman arrived to further help them.
But all that has changed today. You don't know what someone might have on them(ie:guns.knives). You don't know if maybe they have friends down the road ready to car/ttruck jack you or worse. You can't stop to help anyone on the road anymore for fear of the same things. This is just truck drivers fears but the general public concerns.
Life was nicer "back in the day".
