Hitchhiking is a common thing to do in Europe. Lots of students and young people who try to go on adventure/explore trips through Europe figure it is a cheap way to travel. It was very popular during the 70's and 80's. I have never seen anyone hitchhiking in America, only in movies. You just can't compare America to Europe. It is a difference like day and night. People are just different!
By the way, in Germany you call hitchhiking "tramping".

Katrin, wilst tramping gehen mit Turken und Russischer mafia, eh? Ja, Deutschland ist jezt total versaut. Tramping gibts bald nicht mehr, wenn gute Deutsche Deutschland nicht von Araber, Russen, und das ganze Misthaufen retten! Unser Land fuer Deutsche, Auslaender raus!
