This is a nice idea. However, it should be noted that in some places taking sand is prohibited. Also, in Hawaii legend has it that if you take black sand or lava rock, the goddess Pele will punish you with bad luck. I know someone who had a string of bad luck after bringing home black sand from Hawaii. He mailed it back. In fact, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and numerous hotels receive packages of sand and other items all the time from people wishing to reverse their bad fortune by returning the "sacred" sand.
