Alaskan village building $76 million airport - for 100 people
The Alaskan village of Akutan is home to 100 permanent residents and 900 seasonal workers. Like many Alaskan communities, Akutan makes its money off seafood production. At the moment, the village is only reachable by a 70 year old sea plane - and they are quickly running out of parts for it. The solution is a new airport. The facility will transport people on the 20 minute flight to the town of Unalaska where they can connect to other flights. Like most Alaskan transportation services - this route is extremely heavily subsidized.
The new airport will cost a whopping $76 million. The sea plane currently carries 5500 people annually, so some simple math shows that in the first ten years of operation, the tax payers are forking over $1350 for every single passenger using the facility. This doesn't even include any additional costs of operating the airport (another $500,000 each year).
Larry Cotter, the chief executive of the Aleutian Pribilof Island Community Development Association says the following about the airport:
Well, call me ignorant, but I don't understand why a village of 100 permanent residents needs a $76 million airport. If the current sea plane is falling apart, wouldn't the best solution be a new sea plane? Alaska has 256 airports, and even the smallest of them may only serve 40 people - costing millions to build and maintain."Some people are probably positing, 'Oh, it's another Bridge to Nowhere, except it's an airport to nowhere. Anybody who says that is really ignorant."
Then again, when you read that Chicago's O'Hare is spending $6.6 billion on its renovation plan, $76 million seems like a bargain.

mickey Mar 8th 2010 5:22PM
I can see Akutan from my house.
phil Mar 8th 2010 9:30PM
Dude. That wasn't Sara. She was not a U.S. Congressman and had no say in Federal spending. It was Senator Ted Stevens who added that little bridge number into a bill. Wanna pull up another tax-payer monstrosity that has already been built: John Murtha Airport in Penn... " which has received upward of $150 million in subsidies even though it has only three flights a day — all to Washington." p.s. Democrat.
Sara scares the bejesus outta left wingers!

My, oh my...and look who comes from Alaska no less. I bet you won't hear ole Sarah Falin Palin say one word about this waste of money. It seems to me that having a couple of new sea planes would be a whole lot cheaper than an airport for a town of 100 year around residents... Granted I love sea food, but not that much. Lay you odds that the Republican's won't gripe once over this spending, when US I 70 and US I 35 could use some major repairs...and so could many other freeways and bridges across the US.

Your and idiot and all of you that have never been to Alaska and seen what is meant about being in the bush. This is very isolated country and you can not get into your car and drive. Also all the supplies for the full time residents has to be flown in also. By the way she may have been governor of Alaska and quit because she is from Utah originally she is not from Alaska. Get your facts right.
Ray Ellis 56 years living in Alaska I no Alaskans And Palin was not one of us. JUst another outsider like you.
PilotSteve Mar 8th 2010 7:26PM
Are you an idiot? This is clearly a troll post but I'll reply anyway. If you recall, it Palin that DID get the bridge to nowhere legislation removed. And it's the donkey party that is the group of gross overspending and debt, just check the most recent numbers.

Sounds like another pork prodject for Sarah. What a waste! Buy a new plane. It'd be a lot cheaper!!
Mark Armor Mar 8th 2010 2:25PM
Don't disagree about the waste of it all, but she's not Governor anymore.
I'm not sure if she's even in the state long enough to qualify as a citizen anymore.
TIM CAN DO IT !! Mar 8th 2010 2:28PM
As far as I can recall.... Sarah is no longer an elected official.
How is she going to make ANYTHING happen?
CTG Mar 8th 2010 3:17PM
When did she EVER make anything happen. She couldn't even make herself finish a termas governor, nor could she stay in any college for more than a year of so.
willy Mar 8th 2010 4:20PM
Careful there CTG, you are proving that you are spouting about what you don't know, She has a BS from Idaho State.
shrksb8 Mar 8th 2010 4:37PM
Um yeah Willy....she EVENTUALLY finished the degree after pasting together credits from all of the schools she attended. And a degree in what? YOU said it....BS!!!!!!!
chucki42 Mar 8th 2010 2:36PM
it is called seafood industry! people want the product and they need a place to ship it out of. every wonder why the price of seafood is so high? now you know. getting it to market.
Joe Mar 8th 2010 2:38PM
Sarah Palin has been out of office for sometime now. Maybe you guys should catch up on the news. If I remember right, it's a Democratic Congress approving the pork projects!
Ed Mar 8th 2010 2:40PM
Terrible reporting... the author fails to report that the airport is being funded by the State of Alaska. NO Federal funds are being used. Furthermore, while this town has a small population it is also an area of rich resources that is already commissioned for a ten year resource development project. The future projects need the airport to support this development, which by the way, has the ability making BILLIONS for the State!!!
If you want to be a real investigative journalist (Scott Carmichael), why don't you take a look at the 'John Murtha Airport' in Western Pennsylvania that cost the U.S. taxpayers 60 Million plus operations expenses plus subsidies to the airline that operates 3 flights per day!!!
MDM Mar 8th 2010 5:51PM
Sorry, Ed, that is incorrect. According to the airport project manager, Tom Schmid in Alaska, the project is being funded by diverse sources. Most of the funding is coming from the federal government. (52 million federal tax dollars).
"Schmid said the project is complicated and unique because money is coming from diverse sources, including $52 million from the Federal Aviation Administration, $1 million from Trident Seafoods, $1 million from the community, and $8 million from state" Below is the link to the February 24, 2010 article from KUCB news in Alaska as the source.

George Mar 8th 2010 2:46PM
Sounds like another John Murtha airport project.
George Willits Mar 8th 2010 2:46PM
I credit "hate Sarah" people with the same mind-set as garden-variety fanatics like the taliban, truthers, birthers and other paranoiacs.
Dean Mar 8th 2010 2:51PM
It has also been reported that the Murtha airport makes those 3 flights per day without passengers at times so they can keep thier on-time rating. What a waste!
This so-called reporter is just following the Obama mantra of blame the ones who aren't in charge anymore.
sam Mar 8th 2010 6:01PM
yeah and Murtha is now dead, so they carry no one. nice.
