Spanish fisherman nets camera lost on cruise ship two years ago
Back in October 2008, Mr. and Mrs. Gregory from South Africa were enjoying a cruise on the magnificent Queen Mary 2, making photos of their vessel passing alongside the famous QE2.When taking their photos, the camera accidentally fell overboard into the Atlantic off the coast of Ireland. Usually, dropping a camera into the ocean means the end of the camera, and the photos stored on it.
To the couples amazement, their camera and memory card were returned to them this week after a Spanish fisherman caught it in one of his nets.
Apparently, Benito Estevez found the camera, and was able to track down where the photos were taken, contacted the cruise line, and managed to reunite the couple with their photos.
Of course, the camera was damaged beyond repair, but the memory card was still in excellent condition, as were the photos stored on it.
Peter Shanks, the CEO of Cunard obviously took good advantage of this fantastic event, and had the following to say:
Kudos to everyone involved - I'm guessing that most fishermen would just throw trash like that away, but to go to this much effort to reunite someone with their photos is a breath of fresh air."In all my years in the travel industry I have never heard of such a heart-warming stroke of luck and we at Cunard are delighted that Mr. and Mrs. Gregory have been reunited with their photos. The images are even more poignant as they depict the last transatlantic crossing of the great QE2 and can never be taken again."

The fisherman and camera owner were united as a direct result of his posting his find on Cruisecritic.com, a message board for cruisers.

Maybe Toyota should build their brake componants from the same material as those memory cards.

I would hope that Peter Shanks, CEO of Cunard, rewarded Mr Estevez for his kindness. Publicity like that is hard to come by. It was so nice of Mr Estevez to return their memories back to them. Would have loved to find out what brand that memory card was as well.

Good show to you fisherman! "Catching" that camera in your net and returning it to its rightful owners says to me that you are but a saint of a man. I'm sure the owners, as well as God, Himself, has a special place for you in their hearts, and in Heaven. Good man! I'm glad that the memory card was not damagewd and that the pictures are fully intact. That is one cruise that I would hate to lose the pictures and memories of, much less the card with all the pics on it. Kudos to you fisherman!

Free cruise? For a fisherman? Wait a minute - - wouldn't that be like rewarding a bus driver with a cross-country trip on Greyhound?? LOL - Just kidding, I think a free cruise would be very nice - and appropriate!

I lost my virginity on a beach near Cocoa Beach Florida some 20 years ago. It was never returned and I don't look for it....just enjoy the memory.

Personally I think that this is just a story ad for curise ships to meation their offerings. Did I overlook the click for the view of the pictures? I only found ads for the innovations of cruise ships. Maybe the fisherman did find the camera and maybe there are good people still left in the world to go beyond their expectations. Let me see the pictures and I will then truely judge this artical. I am surprised that the manufactuers of the camera and memory card developers we're not on this like the sound of the ocean in a sea shell. Send me free cruise tickets and I will hush. :)
