Galley Gossip: The Bachelor - airline employees, spouses & why Vienna is perfect for Jake
If you think long distance dating is difficult, try being married to an airline employee. It ain't easy. Because working for an airline is not just a job, it's a lifestyle, a very unusual one. Even now, seven years later, my husband, a man who travels more often than I do, doesn't completely understand how things work in the aviation industry and will often times get frustrated whenever we're discussing our travel schedules. That's because my schedule, much like a pilot's schedule, can change at a moments notice, making it difficult to create long term plans. I work holidays and weekends and I'm away from home for days at a time. Not many people can handle that.Pilots, for the most part, are type A personalities. They're logical thinkers who remain calm, cool, and in control as they command the aircraft. Think Captain Sullenberger. There's no room for emotion when faced with ditching an airplane into the Hudson River. Flight attendants, on the other hand, tend to be caretakers. We can pretty much make do in just about any situation. There's a reason why so many flight attendants end up on reality television shows like Survivor, Amazing Race, etc. Now they say opposites attract. I believe it. So is it any wonder that many pilots and flight attendants wind up having relationships with people who are completely different from themselves? Quite a few pilots tend to choose nurturing types like flight attendants, nurses and teachers, while a lot of flight attendants seem to get involved with pilots, police officers and firemen. Makes sense.
In my last post, The Bachelor - pilots, fashion & a few pilot fashion tips, I mentioned that I'm a fan of the reality television show The Bachelor. Well it just so happens that this season the man in command of the rose ceremony is a pilot named Jake. I truly believe that Vienna, one of the final four contestants, will be the last woman standing. What can I say, I always go for the underdog. Also, I admire strength in the face of adversity. Oh, sure, Vienna's a little immature, sharing intimate details of her dates with Jake that would have been better left unsaid, but she's young, thinks she's in love, and excited about what the future may hold. No one is perfect. So why would I choose the wild child who rubs everyone the wrong way, the woman who snuck into bed with the captain of her dreams only to be turned away and sent back to where she came from? Two reasons: 1. She has the type of personality that can handle life as a pilot's wife. 2. The psychological effect of fear.

Remember Jake's one on one date with Vienna? More specifically, remember the bungee jump nervous breakdown? Jake, it turns out, is afraid of heights. But he's a pilot! I know. How can a pilot who spends a majority of his time at 30,000 feet be afraid of heights? Simple. In an airplane Jake is in control. But jumping off the side of a bridge is a completely different story. So when Vienna, quite naturally, found herself comforting Jake as he tried to catch his breath before taking the giant leap, I thought to myself, perhaps she's the one. Finally, hand in hand, Jake and Vienna took the plunge. That's when I knew she had an edge over the other women in the house. Then, as the two of them bounced a few feet above the ground, face to face, embracing each other tightly and kissing passionately upside down, I felt like she might be the one to walk away with the final rose. I'm glad, because I think Vienna is perfect for Jake.
Jake should choose a woman who is not only nurturing, but also independent since she will spend half the month alone. Jake will be away at least twelve days a month. Because of this he needs someone strong, confident, and loyal, a woman who can deal with last minute changes and can also make spur of the moment decisions that include back up plans A, B, & C - just in case something goes wrong, because when you work for an airline, something is bound to go wrong. Take it from me, a flight attendant, this is not an easy combination to find in a partner. Here's why the other women are all wrong for Jake...
- GIA: Smart, sweet, and drop dead gorgeous, Gia has it going on. She's the perfect woman. If I were a man, she would be the one. If Jake weren't a pilot, I would root for her. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Gia ends up one of the last two women standing at the alter. But because Gia admitted in the last episode that she doesn't always feel secure, which is not a good thing when married to a person who isn't always around to boost the ego, I don't think she's the perfect match for Jake.
- ALI: No doubt about it, Ali is the most outspoken woman in the house. At times she comes off as a you-know-what. Instead of focusing on Jake, she's chosen to put all her energy into hating the competition, Vienna. Not a good sign. Marriage is work. It's not easy to remain focused on the positive, on what made you fall in love with your partner in the first place without life distracting you from what's truly important. Can a person prone to jealousy and negativity handle a life with someone who is constantly surrounded by adoration from both men and women? I doubt it.
- TENLEY: Sensitive and sweet, she's a likeable girl with a big heart. I can see why Jake would be attracted to her. But in the long run, she might be too fragile for Jake's lifestyle after being involved in a failed marriage to the one and only man she's known intimately, a man who abandoned her for another woman. Jake's a pilot. Each and every month he will have to leave her in order to go to work. Is Tenley strong enough to handle all those nights at home alone? I don't think so.

A little immature? Puhlease, that girl acts like a 12 year old who doesn't get her own way. I bet underneath that act she puts on she's just a high-maintenance girl who if she ends up with Jake, will be whining on the phone that he's away all the time and not spending time & attention on her when she knew full well what his job was when she dated him. I've seen it happen to guys I know and the girls were exactly like her. Let's not mention the ex-husband/boyfriend and what happened there.... yep, REAL nice, Vienna... you see little moments here and there where she thinks the camera isn't on her and her facial expressions say it all. She thinks of herself as the underdog but I believe she looks down her nose at the other girls as much as they are "catty" to her.
I go for Tenley. I see myself in her and believe me, heartbroken or not she will give her all to make it work. I can't really see Vienna doing the same once she gets bored. Will be interesting to see who he chooses, my personal opinion is if he picks Vienna, he deserves everything he gets!

Tenley - really? She's my least favorite on the show. The voice alone gets to me.

Tenley can't change her voice but Vienna can stop being a bitch. As for Tenley being "a baby"... well at least she seems to be sweet and considerate, which goes a long way in a relationship. Ali also seems like she is a good match but I don't think she's there for entirely the right reasons...

Hi!
My name is Ulrich and I'm from Austria - I was rather astonished when I saw the name of that girl in "The Bachelor" show - it's VIENNA! Vienna (Wien in our language--> Greets to Kent!) is the capital auf Austria!
America's really the country where it seems that anything's possible - but be honest - who would give his/her daughter first names like "Boston" or "Milwaukee"?
Crazy :-D

Vienna?! No! The signs you see as her being a good match I see as red flags. Vienna going to visit him in his bed at the winery was needy. What is she going to do when he is gone at work for days at a time? Plus she cries at the drop of a hat, which I don't view as standing strong in a house of women. He needs someone more independent and mature, aka Ali. Whatever happens, I'm loving these posts. They're highly entertaining :) !

I agree w/ all the stuff you said abt Vienna and even your reasoning, but I think that in the end Gia would be better for him. She's a NY girl who can probably hold her own and would probably e able to travel w him sometimes and even tho I too believe she is insecure, she's a more mature, real person than Vienna.
LOL, so there are my 2 cents.

Well after tonight's show, my vision for Jake has changed a bit, I agree with your theories, but Vienna is too immature. Gia's accent and voice alone would drive me to jump off a cliff, but Jake seems to like her, and she might be tough enough to handle the lifestyle. Tenley, is sweet, but I think her mother scared Jake off.

Several years ago, I had Andrew Firestone in first class. I recognized him from this show. One of the reality shows I dont watch. Anyway, handsome man. Nice and enjoyed the attention of flight attendants onboard.

I have to admit I am NOT a fan of Viena, but your points are good points and can sway me to think she may be the last one standing even if I don't like her. I am an Ali and Tenley fan but based on how dramatic the last few seasons of the show has been it will probably be the underdog, Viena. And wouldn't it be just perfect for Tenley, the poor woman who didn't get picked to be the next Bachelorette, I can already see it . . .

This season of The Bachelor has been a VERY hot topic within Pilot Wives Club. I completely agree with your analysis...I do think Vienna could handle the "pilot wifestyle." There is definite amount of confidence, independence, and "Type A" needed to survive. As a pilot wife, and one who is involved with a lot of aviation family advocacy stuff, it angers me that the producers of the show have not given one ounce of a "dose of reality" about being a pilot's wife. THIS IS REALITY TV! Why isn't ABC allowing this type of content to be aired?
I have posted several commentaries on my blog on the topic, particularly this one:

It's all milarkey and a waste of an hour!!

This isn't a real "reality" show. It's almost entirely scripted. It's a ratings getter for ABC and they manipulate the show just as if it were a sitcom or another series show. Ali's "call" to Jake asking to return to him and try again didn't come from San Franciso; she was wearing a La Montrose robe in a hotel room in LA, and the bridge in the background was probably the Bay Bridge against a "green screen". And, if you watched carefully, when Jake was washing his face as the phone rang, he had on blue shorts and no watch, but two seconds later when he answered the phone, he had jeans and a watch on. Magic quick change artist? Or scripted show? I wonder how many takes that involved? Jake is a limo company owner in Dallas for his full time job, and a pilot only occasionally, and mostly only privately.

I think Jake may not choose any of the woman based on what has gone on in the show. When the girls went camping and he had the two on one date he let the two girls go. When the show opened after the first coktail party the man who is coaching Jake had to let one of the woman go because she had an afair with the producer. Then at the comedy night coktail party before the rose ceramony he had to put a woman in a cab back to the house. Then the thing with Ali having to leave because she might loose her job was nonsense. If Ali was truly in love with Jake she would have stayed. I think she pulled that stunt because she was hoping that Jake would tell her that she would be the last one standing at the ring ceramony and when Jake couldn't reasure her of that she stormed off like a little baby. Than when Jake went to the tropical island with the last three women Ali called him to say she wanted him back because she was still hoping he would say if you come back I'll choose you. Ali left to go home shows me that she was just trying to get her way with Jake. In my opinion Jake should never have let the woman with the son go. That was the woman Jake took to Sea world and the son liked airplains. I think she was there for all the right reason. She wanted a father for her son and Jake was getting along so well with her son. I saw them as a cute little family. In the end when Jake goes to the ring ceramony and has to choose between Viena or Tenley I hope he chooses Tenley because Viena reminds me of Paris Hilton. When she went home for the hometown date she greeted her dog first before her parents but, like I said in my opening comments I think Jake will not choose any of the woman because of all the drama that went on in the show. How will Jake know if any of the woman were really there for him.

Informative content, In bachelor party you can drink all night but between the beer and the strippers, wouldn't it be fun to have a few bachelor party games such as Despedida Soltero.
