I think that's the point of the lesser-luxe hotels - to try and get compared to the Four Seasons and Mandarin's of the world. They've been labeled as 'inexpensive' for so long, and most people don't associate 'inexpensive' with luxury, so by adopting a new brand and spiffing up their rooms/image, the hope is that travelers will re-consider when looking for a luxury hotel room. Obviously, you can't compete with some brand names, but I give the Hyatt's, Omni's and Marriott's of the world credit for trying to appeal to another niche market.
