Turn your phone off when told to - or risk being kicked off your flight
Anyone that has flown knows that the cabin crew will make a big deal about having all passengers turn electronic devices off as soon as the cabin doors are closed. Of course, there are always a couple of people that need a little extra reminding. Then there are of course those passengers that need to make a call that is apparently so important, they'll ignore all requests to turn their phone off. A 20 year old man from Colorado fits that profile - and his phone call was so important, that it triggered a fight when he refused to turn his phone off. By the time the fight broke out, the plane had taken off from Charles De Gaulle airport, and four American security agents got involved.
With a disruptive passenger on board, the pilot took no risks, turned the plane around and landed back at the airport where the man was handed over to French police officers.
To make matters worse for this

My feelings exactly. Good for you Cathy.

You are right. 110%

Good reply. There is nothing in the current literature or government studies that support this policy but it doesn't matter. IT IS THEIR PLANE so abey their rules or don't fly on it. Hospitals are no longer requiring cell phones be turned off because there is no clinical based evidence to support the old rules regarding no cell phones in their facilities. I've worked in hospitals for over 25 years and this is the current standard.

Rules ARE rules, but there should be a reason for them.
If they thought the cell phones were bad for the planes, then OK. But, now that it's known they don't, they should take down or modify the rule. Off for takeoffs and landings, for example. Or, OFF for those sensitive older planes Dan keeps reminding us about. But, ON for the new, toughened ones.
Regards

It does not matter if Hamachi is 110% correct or not. When you select to fly on an airline and their policy is "no cell phone during take-off", then you agree when you pay for that ticket. Read the small print! If you don't like it, then don't fly the friendly skies. I know that cell phones are wonderful and convenient, but they sure have turned a lot of us into rude a$$holes.

If they want your cell phone off they do it for a reason. Until they change the policy of cell phone use while flying these arrogant idiots who do not follow the rules should be punished. This is plain and simple DUH.

To bad there wasn't a GI sitting behind Mr. Sun (Center of the Universe). They might have helped him by breaking the battery out of his phone. And securing the battery in his *ear.
The possible interference with elctronics is only one of many reasons the Airlines want the phones off. Communications between possible terrorists, Distraction of passengers in the case of an emergency, loose hard objects in the cabiin are some other reasons.
It's simple, when you buy a ticket you agree to follow the airline's rules...So follow them!

I still find it hard to believe that people are flying on airplanes knowing the new rules of flight, yet still think they are "above the rules". I sat next to a young girl who was on the phone with her mother when we started to take off..the stewardes reprimanded her, so she unclicked her seatbelt and ran into the bathroom during take off.........

Also maybe the airline is thinking more about other ppl than if it effects their equipment... I mean even though you like hearing the sound of your own voice.. I honestly don't want to hear about the most recent girl you slept with or how so and so upset you. I have no desire to know about your life and would much rather be able to concentraite on my book than here your loud voice. I totally agree with the airline and I have to say this but you know you ppl who are actually supporting this guy are the same ones that keep your phone on in the movies or while going threw check out... Untrained, rude ppl who think the world revolves around them.
Kathy Jan 29th 2010 9:16PM
I'm glad the airline kicked him off! I hope the other airlines don't re-book him.
This idiot needs to be taught a lesson, if you don't like the airlines rules then find another means of transportation. Whether or not your cell phone interfers with airline equiptment is not the issue, it's following a companies rule if you do business with them.

I don't care if cells phones affect or do not affect aircraft equipment. When the flight crew tell you to turn your cell phone off, YOU TURN IT OFF. The legal authority on the aircraft during flight time is the captain (pilot). Flight time starts from the time the aircraft moves under its own power until it stops at its destination. The Captain is responsible for the operation, security, and safety of the aircraft. He/she is the law during flight time. So when you are asked to turn your electronic equipment off, TURN THE DAMM THING OFF.

Ok if he is going to be that STUPID in light of recent events. He is going to be that stupid. I appualad the airline for doing what they did. Let him find and pay for his own way home. People nowdays ( im speaking of a younger generation) seeem to feel that maners and common courtsey are a thing of the past and they can do what they want. Well I think that pinhead found out different. I hope he enjoys his time in Europe. Maybe now when someone tells him to do something he will

Rules are Rules. The people who don't like them are usually the one's who break them.
Dennis Jan 29th 2010 9:23PM
That's the problem with young people these days...they think the world revolves around them and they have no respect for anyone else. This guy got exactly what he deserves! Maybe next time he'll think twice before using his cell phone when he's not supposed to.
Roberto Jan 29th 2010 9:49PM
Great, we have many idiots like this in Orange County too.
emily Jan 29th 2010 9:33PM
What a little punk douchebag.
exoticdoc2 Jan 29th 2010 9:40PM
This fool needs to pay every passenger on board that flight the price of their ticket for the inconvenience. A decent court would enforce it or throw him in prison and sell his possessions to pay it.
chas Jan 29th 2010 9:38PM
One Big Reason to silence cell phones on a flight is why would you want over 100 persons talking on the cell while flying 5 hours or more . The deafening sound of everyone screaming over each other is reason enough to turn off the phone.

I am just returning home ,on the flight seated next to me was a young man who kept working on his laptop and cell phone after the announcement to turn them off. It was as though that didn't apply to him. I ask him politely if he had heard the announcement,he looked at me as though he couldn't believe I had ask him to turn it off.My next step had he not turned it off was to summon the stewardess. I am extremely serious about my safety in the skies & you should be too.
