This was a great post. For the past ten years, I traveled to the southwest every year with a friend to do some long road trips. I've visited many (but not all) of the places you mention in this post and I have to say you're spot on. We do go to the Grand Canyon and Zion National Parks, but the smaller, out-of-the-way places are often where most of our long lasting, fond memories come from.
Now I live in Phoenix and I still like visiting the strange little off-the-beaten-path places that most people don't really know about.
