One country in the world, Brazil, does not seem to be having any hotel occupation problems - in December, January, February at least. You can´t get a room for love or money for New Year in Rio this year and occupancy is already at 88% for hotels during carnival (mid February)- 100% at pousadas (smaller hotels, guesthouses and b&bs). For independent travellers who want a choice of the best places to stay at half the high season price follow the LA Times recommendation and check out http://www.hiddenpousadasbrazil.com . Low season starts in March and the weather is usually much better then- in Rio and the NorthEast at least.
