Is it possible to "get at the truth" anywhere you travel? It would be easy if the truth were absolute, but it isn't. Are people who travel to China concerned about its Human Rights Abuses record? Do visitors to most countries really care what goes on behind the scenes? Vietnam, Burma (Mynmar) to name a few. What makes North Korea different? In traveling through North Korea I spent the first while trying to get to the "real story", but then decided to enjoy my trip and appreciate what the hosts had laid on for us. You cannot miss the poverty and the "showiness" of some of the things that we saw, but then I don't go to the slums of Paris and report on them either.
