Obituary: The Orient Express
I screwed up big time.I've always wanted to ride the Orient Express, the famous Paris-to-Istanbul sleeper train made famous by countless movies and novels. It's an elegant train steeped in glamor and history. Ever since it opened in 1883 it was the way to go to the East. It's been one of my travel goals for as long as I can remember, but I figured I could always put it off until next year because it would always be there.
Today was it's last day.
Because the trip is more about the journey than the destination. Because you can't see the details of the land from an airplane window. Because people talk to each other on trains.
Yes, commentators are pointing out that the route has changed many times over the years, and the train that shut down today didn't even run the whole way anymore, but that's like saying that the Parthenon isn't the real thing because half of the stones are gone. Something old and wonderful has still died.
So next time you think you can leave a dream until "next year", don't. You might wake up and find the dream's over.
CLARIFICATION: There have been a couple of comments saying the Orient Express is still operating. The train that shut down is, indeed, the direct heir of the original Oriental Express, although it had stopped its full service decades ago. Modern companies, such as the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, have used variants of the name but are not the original service. The original Simplon Orient Express opened in 1919, although it too has gone through permutations over the years. For a time there were three "Orient Expresses" running simultaneously, with the Simplon being the second oldest. The original, true "Orient Express" started in 1883. The Venice-Simplon Orient Express is now the closest to the original we have, with vintage carriages from the 1920s and 30s. I'll have to ride it some day, assuming it doesn't go out of business too!

It’s a shame that the author does not clarify that this is the generic European train route in "less than formal accommodations" that most Americans would not be caught dead (Murder or otherwise) on. The actual DIRECT route ended around 1977? and was not the Orient Express of Agatha Christie times due to politics between countries, a little Iron Curtain and other “influences” over the years. This is not the deluxe Orient Express (on refurbished rail cars) that is still running and what most people imagine when you say Orient Express.

Your point about luxury is totally valid, but the Orient Express that closed is the direct heir to the original. The name has been used in various permutations by different companies.

How disappointing and sad! We would have also liked the opportunity to experience this beautiful journey.Maybe if we had ample time people like us could have kept it going for many years to come.

May I humbly direct you to a substitute? One that can compare in service, elegance and comfort, however a different sort of scenery?

Writers need to write correctly. Fix the mistake please.

And ruin their fun? That would be heartless of me.

You can still have the experience of riding in a vintage train car. The Midland Railway in Baldwin City KS operates across 12 miles of Kansas prairie in vintage cars dating back to 1890. It's a reminder of days gone by and fun for the entire family. IF you are interested, go to midland-ry.org

There seems to be some confusion about the ending of the Orient Express. The Orient Express that has just been discontinued was only an overnight Strasbourg-Vienna train. The luxury service that the original Orient Express was associated with had vanished long ago. BUT - the privately run Venice-Simplon Orient Express is still running as a high end luxury service operation with restored passenger train cars.

The Simplon Orient Express opened in 1919. For a time there were three "Orient Expresses" running simultaneously, with the Simplon being the second oldest. The original "Orient Express" started in 1883. The Simplon service is a good one and the closest to the original we have. I'll have to ride it some day, assuming it doesn't go out of business too!
The train that just closed was the direct heir to the original service. Yes, it was a pale shadow if its former self, but as I said in my post, it's always sad to see these things go.

I guess the obituary is really on the discontinuance of the train, the Orient Express, that the myth, the Orient Express, is based on. If it wasn't through exposure in films and novels, the trains discontinuance wouldn't rate mentioning in any general interest outlet. If you were on that train tonight for the final run, you would be hard pressed to find anything that would recall the trains glory days and for justification of the myth. I guess the myth of the Orient Express represents a time when travel was an art and adventure and getting there was part of the fun, not just sterile transit from point A to point B, as it is today.

This is almost as bad as the day the Dodger's left Brooklyn.

It may not be the original service, but it's very authentically done and they use the original trains from the 20s and 30s. I think there'll always be some demand for a journey like this, whoever runs it.
You can see a detailed review on my blog if interested.
